  • Filed:
    May 31, 2002
  • Appl. No.:
    10/158137
  • Inventors:
    Weibo Weng - Columbus IN
Gordon L. Starr - Columbus IN
    Guangping Pan - Columbus IN
  • Assignee:
    Cummins Inc. - Columbus IN
  • International Classification:
    F01P 104
  • US Classification:
    123 4135, 1231936
  • Abstract:
A piston cooling system and associated piston are provided which effectively cools and lubricates the upper crown portion of a piston and the connecting rod/piston pin area using a single cooling nozzle. The piston cooling system includes a piston having a cooling gallery, a cooling nozzle positioned to direct cooling oil through a flow path to the entrance of the cooling gallery, and a deflecting surface positioned in the flow path to deflect a portion of the cooling oil into a deflected flow path toward the connecting rod and piston pin area. The deflecting surface may be formed on a baffle plate positioned as the bottom wall of the cooling gallery or may be integrally formed on the piston body.

    Jun 6, 2003
  • Appl. No.:
    10/455776
  • Inventors:
Weibo Weng - Columbus IN, US
Gordon Starr - Columbus IN, US
  • Assignee:
    Cummins Inc. - Columbus IN
  • International Classification:
    F02F001/18
    B23P006/02
  • US Classification:
    123/193400, 123/193200, 029/888011
  • Abstract:
A method for increasing displacement of an internal combustion engine having at least one cylinder liner received in a cylinder bore including the steps of removing the cylinder liner from the cylinder bore, and installing a replacement cylinder liner into the cylinder bore. The removed cylinder liner has an internal diameter and an external diameter, and the replacement cylinder liner has an internal diameter and an external diameter, the internal diameter of the replacement cylinder being larger than the internal diameter of the removed cylinder liner, and the external diameters of the removed cylinder liner and the replacement cylinder liner being substantially the same. Preferably, the replacement cylinder liner is made of compacted graphite iron.
  • Continuous Liquid Level Measurement System

  • US Patent:
    62987216, Oct 9, 2001
  • Filed:
    Sep 3, 1999
  • Appl. No.:
    9/390615
  • Inventors:
    Alfred Schuppe - Columbus IN
Dean H. Dringenburg - Seymour IN
Matthew L. Schneider - Seymour IN
    Weibo Weng - Columbus IN
    Mike French - Columbus IN
  • Assignee:
Cummins Engine Company, Inc. - Columbus IN
  • International Classification:
    G01F 2300
  • US Classification:
    73299
  • Abstract:
A continuous liquid level measurement system is disclosed which is based upon a differential pressure measurement. The pressure of the liquid level to be measured is calibrated with a second pressure measurement of the pressure above the liquid in order to get a more accurate pressure measurement which is related in a predetermined manner to the level of the liquid. For instances in which the liquid to be measured is in a harsh environment, the invention provides for a means for mounting the sensitive pressure measurement devices remotely from the liquid.
  • Durable Cylinder Liner And Method Of Making The Liner

    view source
  • US Patent:
    60448210, Apr 4, 2000
  • Filed:
    Nov 19, 1998
  • Appl. No.:
    9/195603
  • Inventors:
    Weibo Weng - Columbus IN
  • Assignee:
Cummins Engine Company, Inc. - Columbus IN
  • International Classification:
    C23F 1700
  • US Classification:
    1231932
  • Abstract:
An improved cylinder liner, and method for making the liner, is provided which includes a top section and a bottom section connected by a friction weld. The top section is formed from a material having a higher resistance to wear and/or a higher resistance to thermal distortion while the bottom section is formed of a less expensive material thereby minimizing costs while achieving a durable liner. A liner durability and cost optimizing arrangement is provided which limits the predetermined axial extent of the top section to an area corresponding to the greatest amount of mechanical and thermal loading thereby limiting material costs, maintaining structural integrity and maximizing durability. The method of the present invention creates an effective seamless connection between the top and bottom sections while permitting materials of different resistance properties to be utilized to maximize durability and minimize costs.
