Abstract:

1. A system comprising a pair of stations having two parallel communication links therebetween, means for transmitting coded data signals of varying levels between the stations in opposite directions over said links and a receiver for said signals, each station including means for continuously detecting the level of signals received thereat over one of said links and for outputting when said signal level indicates a system malfunction, and further including means connected to said detecting means and responsive to the output thereof for automatically readjusting the transmitting means at the other station over the other link and the receiver at that station to correct the malfunction indicated by the output of the detecting means, said signal level detecting means including a continuously running timing means outputting after an uninterrupted fixed period from its zero time condition and clearing means connected ahead of the receiver for sampling data signals and also being connected to the timing means to reset it back to its zero time condition in response to a change in level of the data signals.

Abstract:

1. A one way communication system comprising means for transmitting coded pulse data and synchronizing pulses from a transmitter to a receiver having a source of clock pulses, monitoring means connected to the receiver and responsive continuously to received data for producing an output signal indicative of a malfunction in said system, control means having an input connected to said monitoring means and having an "ON" condition output responsive to said monitoring means output signal and an "OFF" condition output, receiver adjusting means having an input connected to said monitoring means and an output connected to said receiver for readjusting said receiver responsive to said monitoring means output signal, transmitter adjusting means having its output connected to said transmitter for readjusting and instituting corrective action on the transmitter including the blocking of data transmission and the initiation of the transmission of synchronization pulses responsive at its input to the "ON" condition of said control means, a return line connecting the output of said control means to the input of said transmitter adjusting means, and means connecting said receiver to said control means for turning said control means to the "OFF" condition when the malfunction indicated by the output signal of the monitoring means has been corrected, said means for turning the control means "OFF" including means for delaying the turning off of the control means until a predetermined number of pulses free of the effects of the malfunction are received without interruption.

A melt-blown fabric for pouching smokeless tobacco or a smokeless tobacco substitute can include melt-blown polymer fibers. The fabric can have a basis weight of less than 30 gsm and a tensile strength of at least 4 mJ in at least one predetermined direction. Method of making the fabric can include melt-blowing a polymeric material against a support surface and bonding the fibers or arranging them in a predetermined orientation. Pouched smokeless tobacco or tobacco substitute products including the fabrics provided herein can provide desirable flavor and tactile experience.

Abstract:

A method of enrobing a product portion in polymer strands includes mounting at least one product portion on a holding device and passing the at least one product portion through a polymer enrobing zone. The polymer enrobing zone can include a flow of polymeric fibers produced by a polymer spray head. The polymer fibers can wraparound the at least one product portion to produce an enrobed product portion. The holding device can hold the at least one product portion by passing at least partially through the body of the product portion. At least a portion of the holding device is removed from the enrobed product portion. In some cases, the at least one product portion includes smokeless tobacco.

An apparatus for enrobing a product portion can include at least one polymer spray head adapted to create at least one flow of polymeric fibers to produce at least one polymer enrobing zone and a conveyor system adapted to move at least one product portion from at least one position below at least one polymer enrobing zone and to at least one position above at least one polymer enrobing zone to drop each product portion through one or more polymer enrobing zones a plurality times at different orientations to enrobe each product portion with polymeric fibers.

Abstract:

A nicotine lozenge includes a body that is partially or wholly receivable in an oral cavity. The body includes a soluble-fiber matrix and nicotine or a derivative thereof dispersed in the soluble-fiber matrix. A nicotine lozenge may include at least 40 weight percent of soluble fiber. Soluble fiber in a nicotine lozenge may include maltodextrin. The nicotine lozenge is adapted to release the nicotine or a derivative thereof from the body when the body is received within the oral cavity of an adult consumer and exposed to saliva. A method of making nicotine lozenges includes forming a molten mixture of at least 40 weight percent soluble fiber, nicotine, and less than 15 weight percent water while maintaining a mixture temperature of less than 150 C. and portioning the molten mixture into a plurality of nicotine lozenges. The ingredients can be mixed to form the molten mixture in an extruder.
