Abstract:

Method and system for analyzing local composition and structure of a compound having one or more non-zero gradients in concentration for one or more selected constituents in a selected direction. A beam of X rays having representative energy E is received by a mono-capillary or poly-capillary device and is directed at a selected small region of the compound. A portion of the X rays is diffracted at the selected region by one or more constituents of the compound, at each of two or more diffraction angles relative to a selected surface or lattice plane(s) of the compound; and the diffracted portion of X rays for each of these diffraction angles is received and analyzed at an X-ray detector. A portion of the X rays excites fluorescence radiation that is received by a fluorescence detector to estimate the relative concentrations in a compound having two or more constituents. Fluorescence X rays and diffraction X rays can be detected at each desired translational position and rotation for a target site. As a result, a concentration map for various constituents in the compound can be prepared, together with a phase map illustrating the structure of a combinatorial compound.

Abstract:

The present invention provides an improved extraction process of the type in which herbs are boiled in a solvent to produce an herbal liquid that is concentrated to form an herbal extract. In a first phase of the improved process, herbs are boiled in a solvent in an extraction vessel to form an herbal liquid and an herbal vapor; the herbal vapor is drawn into a collection tank, where it is allowed to condense into an herbal condensate that is periodically re-introduced into the herbal liquid in the extraction vessel. In a second phase, a portion of the herbal liquid is drawn into a concentration vessel, where it is concentrated into herbal extract while the herbal liquid continues to boil in the extraction vessel; this second phase is repeated until there is no more herbal liquid in the extraction vessel. In a third and final phase, the last of the herbal liquid drawn into the concentration vessel from the extraction vessel is concentrated into herbal extract.

Abstract:

An acupuncture needle delivery system is disclosed comprising a needle with an upper head portion that is wider in the middle than at its ends. The needle is packaged within a plastic dispensing tube which is greater in diameter than the needle, except at the end of the tube which surrounds the needle's head. The portion of the tube surrounding the head of the needle is narrower than the widest part of the head to snugly grasp the head and secure the needle within the tube. Upon the imposition of axially directed, manually exerted, downward pressure on the head region, the end of the plastic tube stretches, permitting the needle to be ejected from the other end of the tube.

Abstract:

A preferred embodiment the present invention provides a system for extracting and concentrating active ingredients from herbs. The herbs are boiled in a suitable extraction medium, such as water or alcohol, in an extraction vessel. The extraction vessel is connected to a vacuum line that both serves to lower the pressure of the extraction vessel and to draw off herbal vapor formed in the boiling process. A vapor condenser cools the herbal vapor, forming an herbal condensate that is collected and periodically reintroduced into the extraction vessel, thereby lowering the density of the herbal liquid. After a predetermined period of time, a first portion of herbal liquid is transferred from the extraction vessel to a concentration tank, while the remainder of the herbal liquid continues to boil in the extraction vessel. In a further preferred embodiment of the present invention, the concentration tank is provided with side and bottom heating elements work together to minimize burning of the contents of the concentration tank.

The apparatus comprises a control console with controls designed for foot operation to control various medical devices. The controls include one or more foot pedals and foot switches to control the devices, including a selection switch to allow selection of the device to be controlled at a particular time. The console transmits signals over a wireless medium, to cause a remote receiver unit to select the device to be controlled and to control the selected device over a wired medium, in response to operation of the foot controls. The console may include a rechargeable battery, which may be sealed within the console's housing and charged inductively when the console is placed in a charging station. The receiver unit and the charging station can be separate units or integrated within a single housing.
