Abstract:

A composite body of silicon carbide having binderless, allotropic carbon granules distributed throughout is produced. The nominal size of the binderless allotropic carbon granules can range from 5 to 500 micrometers. The concentration of the binderless allotropic carbon particles can vary from 1. 0 to 35. 0 weight percent. The process to produce such a composite body is to sinter silicon carbide with binderless, carbon-yielding precursor granules. The composite body is utilized in tribological applications. The dense, impervious silicon carbide-binderless carbon composite exhibits excellent physical and tribological characteristics when used as a mechanical face seal, a sliding bearing arrangement, or some other rubbing component.

Abstract:

A water-sensing protection device for use with home appliances such as washing machines and dishwashers, incorporating a water-sensing probe that detects high water levels in a sink basin, wall discharge receiver or a stand pipe. The protection device also has a sensor that can be placed on the floor to detect the presence of water from the failure of the above-described appliances or the drainage system of the sink basin or the sink basin itself. The signal from the sensing probes may be used to deactivate the power to the appliance, resulting in the activation of an auditable alarm and warning light that a water overflow condition exists due to an obstruction in the drainage system, or the failure of the appliance or drainage system has occurred. An optional vibration sensor is also disclosed, since excessive vibration due to load imbalance could be indicative of a potential water problem.

A fuel vapor recovery system for a direct injection internal combustion engine operating in both stratified and homogenous modes includes using fuel vapor with air assisted injectors. A compressor compresses a controlled mixture of fresh air and fuel vapor which is then delivered to the air supply of air assisted injectors, allowing fuel vapors to be purged from the vapor recovery system during all engine operating modes.

Abstract:

A heating system for a vehicle passenger compartment, the vehicle being propelled by an internal combustion engine having an exhaust system that includes a catalytic converter for exhaust gas emission control. The vehicle passenger compartment has a conventional heater case containing air distribution channeling ducts, air outlets, control valves and a blower for forcing air through the ducts. A heat pipe coupled to a heat exchanger located in the engine exhaust system downstream of the catalytic converter is utilized to transfer exhaust gas heat to the heater case thereby eliminating the conventional heater core, and its related plumbing, that utilizes engine coolant as a heat source.

Abstract:

A fastener is provided which is adapted to be at least partially embedded within a molded workpiece. The fastener comprises a first threaded section and a second section. The second section has a first end part defining a shoulder for making contact with a first portion of a mold during formation of the workpiece and a second end part having an outer end face for making contact with a second portion of the mold during formation of the workpiece. The second section further includes a crush-boss extending outwardly from the outer end face for contacting the second portion of the mold and thereby ensuring that the second section of the fastener is compressively engaged by the first and second portions of the mold during formation of the workpiece.

A fuel injection system of the single point, throttle body type in which a fuel injector is located centrally above the inlet to an air throttling body that contains a variable venturi consisting of a plug and nozzle assembly wherein the plug includes a fuel dispersion plate directing the fuel towards a movable nozzle together defining a convergent-divergent flow air that is variable in area in response to the dynamic pressure of the air against it at higher air flows or alternately responsive to the suction of the engine at low air flows to be moved to a position providing essentially a constant air velocity flowing past the fuel under all conditions of operation to shear the fuel and thereby atomize the same for an economical and efficient operation of the engine.
