Emergency Lighting Remote Monitoring And Control System
An emergency lighting monitoring and control system controls and monitors the emergency lights in a building. A central control unit automatically schedules self tests for each of the emergency lights and stores the results of the tests in memory. The self tests include tests of the backup power source and the lamp. Some failures are predicted prior to actual failure. Failures are diagnosed and repairs are suggested. Light output is automatically monitored and adjusted. The central control unit generates a report of the self tests and notifies an operator of failures. An operator views test reports, controls the emergency lights, and schedules tests. The system automatically detects newly installed emergency lighting units.

Abstract:
A method for automatically transmitting information on a lost person comprising the steps of storing user messages containing personal, travel, and outdoor recreation activity information on a database system and transmitting the user messages to predetermined message destinations upon the failure of the user to check in at a predetermined time the user registered with the system.
System For Authenticating Remotely Generated Optical Control Signals
Scott Sikora - Gilbert AZ, US William Conley - Marana AZ, US
International Classification:
H04L 9/00
US Classification:
713168000
Abstract:
An authentication system authenticates remotely generated optical control signals. A remote optical emitter transmits an optical control signal from a remote location. A remote authentication device collocated with the remote optical emitter receives an authentication challenge signal and transmits a compatible authentication response signal. A control optical signal processor positioned at a first location receives the optical control signal from the remote optical emitter and generates a control output signal in response to detection of a valid optical control signal. An authentication device is coupled by a real time data communications link with the optical signal processor and with the remote optical emitter. The control authentication device receives the control output signal from the optical processor, transmits the authentication challenge signal to the remote authentication device in response to receipt of the control output signal and generates an authenticated control output signal in response to receipt of a valid authentication response signal from the remote authentication device.

Abstract:
An emergency lighting test system and method automatically schedules self tests and uses novel test methods to thoroughly test an emergency lighting system. An emergency lighting system comprises a fluorescent lamp, an inverter circuit and a backup power source (e. g. a battery). A microcontroller controls testing of the system and tracks time of day and date for scheduling tests of the lighting system. After a test is performed, the test reports are stored in memory. Two novel tests are used to evaluate the lighting system. A first test determines backup power source condition. The test samples the high frequency signal generated by the inverter circuit to determine an average peak voltage. The average peak voltage is indicative of backup power source voltage. If the average peak voltage falls below a predetermined lower limit, it indicates a backup power source failure.

Federal panel to hear arguments in Wis. union case
In March, U.S. District Judge William Conley overturned a part of the law requiring that unions hold elections each year for members to retain their official status. The judge also said the law illegally halted automatic withdrawal of union dues. The majority of the law remained untouched.
Meanwhile, two challenges to the law are pending in the federal courts. William Conley, a federal judge in the western district of Wisconsin, in March struck down parts of Walker's law, and his decision will be reviewed Sept. 24 during oral arguments before the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicag
