Abstract:

An apparatus for acquiring analytes from a dried biological fluid sample includes a tube, a substrate in a proximal section of the tube, and a sorbent bed in a distal section of the tube. A biological fluid sample is dispensed on the substrate and is dried to form a dried sample. A conditioning solvent is flowed into the distal section to condition the sorbent bed. A first elution solvent is flowed through the substrate and the sorbent bed. Analytes are eluted from the dried sample and retained on the sorbent bed. A second elution solvent is flowed through the substrate and the sorbent bed. The analytes are eluted from the sorbent bed, pass through an opening, and are collected. Alternatively, an elution solvent is flowed through the substrate and the sorbent bed such that analytes eluted from the dried sample pass through the sorbent bed and the opening for collection, while non-analytes are retained on the sorbent bed.

Abstract:

Apparatus and method for sequentially applying predetermined lengths of pressure sensitive tape having an exposed tacky side onto a continuous web of flexible material in spaced relationship. Means are provided for continuously moving the web past a predetermined tape applying position, for conveying a continuous strip of tape from a source through a rotary cutting assembly, and for conveying the cut strips of tape sequentially to the tape applying position into contact with the web wherein during conveyance of the tape areas devoid of adhesive are engaged.

Abstract:

An underwater breathing apparatus well suited for beginning snorkelers, having a mouthpiece, a floating air pickup, and a flexible breathing tube connecting the two. The mouthpiece has a one-way inlet valve and a one-way outlet valve. Air flow is thus rendered unidirectional. Air flows in from the pickup, through the breathing tube, and then to the mouthpiece. The inlet valve prevents the breathing tube from collecting water. The outlet valve discharges spent air and collected water to the exterior. Air thus expelled simulates scuba breathing. The flexible breathing tube enables a novice to enjoy snorkeling without being obliged to hold a rigid breathing tube upright. The floating air pickup has angled, swiveling connection to the breathing tube, thus rendering the float more stable. In alternative embodiments, the breathing supply is manifolded to supply more than one user. In further alternative embodiments, the apparatus includes a hook or eyelet for retaining small personal articles on the float, and includes indicators for observers above the water level to monitor correct breathing procedure.
