Abstract:

A print controller which produces a device specific raster for its printer and also produces a rasterized output in portable and more editable form for export and re-use as an input by other printers which may have different parameters. If the input is in a device independent color space, the rasterized export also will be in a version in a device independent color space, typically CIELAB. If the input is in a printable device dependent color space such as CYMK, the output will be an more editable rasterized version in the same color space, with any printing hints that were in the original will be included in the output. In any case, an override can be provided to change the default selection to any other user-identified version. An example of a device independent color space is CIELAB, of a device dependent version applicable for a number of printers with similar parameters is SWOP CMYK, and of a device dependent version is a printer specific CMYK.

A method for determining a toner usage estimate for a print job to be performed by a printing system having at least one print engine and at least one controller includes determining a set of print conditions for the print job and selecting a set of parameters associated with the print conditions. A softproofing system and method render an input document for display on a monitor to faithfully represent projected output from a target print engine, where the displayed document representation rendering is modeled to include internal print engine specific enhancements or characteristics of the target print engine. The system and method identify the target print engine and print engine specific rendering characteristics from the specified content, such as an input file, which may be a raster image or an electronic file in a PDL format. Abstract:

A printing system includes a bypass path that transports printing media around a marking system such that the printing media can avoid the marking system and not be affected by the marking system. A memory device associates “non-printing media route information” with one or more corresponding storage units when printing media that should avoid the marking system is loaded into the one or more corresponding storage units. The non-printing media that should avoid the marking system may damage the marking system and/or may be damaged by the marking system. Therefore, the controller prevents printing instructions from being executed that direct the printing media into the marking system from one or more of the storage units with which the non-printing media route information is associated in the memory device.

Abstract:

A method for customizing a printed document. The method includes determining the scent application capabilities of a finishing system. If the finishing system can produce a scent, the next step is to determine whether to apply a scent to the document based at least in part upon information associated with the intended recipient of the document. The document is then printed and a scent is applied to the document if it is determined that a scent should be applied to the document. Adding variable scents to variable documents can help increase the power of targeted advertising.
