Abstract:

In a first aspect, a method is provided for updating a compressed cache. The method includes the steps of (1) initiating an update routine for replacing first data stored within the cache with second data, wherein a first section of a compressed data band stored in the cache includes the first data and a second section of the compressed data band includes third data; and (2) in response to initiating the update routine, replacing the first data within the compressed data band with the second data without decompressing the third data. Numerous other aspects are provided.

Abstract:

A method and apparatus are provided for dynamically determining a primary adapter in a heterogeneous N-way adapter configuration. Each of the adapters generates information about itself and exchanges the information with all other adapters. First a decision-making adapter is identified. Then the decision-making adapter compares the adapter-generated information of all the adapters and makes a decision determining the primary adapter. The decision-making adapter communicates the decision to all other adapters. The determined primary adapter assumes a role as the primary adapter and the other adapters assume a role as a secondary adapter.

Abstract:

Parity Update Footprints (PUFPs) are kept on the disk drives themselves (rather than in nonvolatile RAM) so that the PUFPs will move along with the RAID arrays and data they protect. This permits effective detection of and recovery from many unexpected-power-loss events, and certain other types of failures, even in a clustered-adapter configuration or with a standalone adapter that has no nonvolatile RAM or only a little nonvolatile RAM. Desirably, many Set PUFP and Clear PUFP operations can be coalesced into each write to the block on the disk which contains the PUFPs, thereby improving system performance.

The screen buffer periodically refreshes the display screen, so a plurality of partition windows are displayed to the computer user. One or more scroll groups can be defined, and one or more partitions can be assigned to each scroll group. Each defined scroll group has a vertical scroll trigger and a horizontal scroll trigger. The display monitors the movement of the cursor within a partition window. When the cursor gets close enough to a boundary of a partition window, to trigger a scroll trigger, the display shifts the partition window within its partition and writes this updated partition window into the screen buffer.

Abstract:

An enhanced fixed function video display terminal having various features for the efficient transmission of data streams. The video display terminal may have a memory for storing substantially more characters than can be displayed to the operator on the display screen width and length. This permits manipulation of data at document page boundaries, scrolling, etc. One or more extended attribute buffers are added to enable characters to be displayed in a variety of fonts, colors, etc. The data stream from the host computer to the display terminal and from the display terminal to the host computer contains data characters and attribute characters which are interleaved for efficiency in input/output programming. When receiving data, the display terminal has the capability of parsing the data stream into data or attribute characters and adding pad characters to completely fill the display buffers. Similarly, the display terminal interleaves data and attribute characters and compacts the data stream by stripping pad characters when sending data back to the host computer.
