Chemical vapor deposition is performed using a plurality of expanding thermal plasma generating means to produce a coating on a substrate, such as a thermoplastic and especially a polycarbonate substrate. The substrate is preferably moved past the generating means. Included are methods which coat both sides of the substrate or which employ multiple sets of generating means, either in a single deposition chamber or in a plurality of chambers for deposition of successive coatings. The substrate surfaces spaced from the axes of the generating means are preferably heated to promote coating uniformity.

Disclosed herein is an assembly for plasma generation comprising a cathode plate comprising a fixed cathode tip, the cathode tip being integral part of the cathode plate. The assembly further comprises at least one cascade plate, at least one separator plate disposed between the cathode plate and the cascade plate, an anode plate, and an inlet for a gas. The cathode plate, separator plate, cascade plate and anode plate are “electrically isolated” from one another, and the electrically isolated cathode plate, separator plate, and cascade plate define a plasma generation chamber. The cathode tip is disposed within the plasma generation chamber.

Abstract:

An apparatus that generates at least one plasma that is stable and adjustable in real time. In one embodiment, the apparatus includes multiple plasma sources that can either be “tuned” in real time to generate plasmas that are similar to each other or, conversely, “detuned” to generate dissimilar plasmas. The apparatus may be sued to provide plasma treatment—such as, but not limited to, coating, etching and activation for an article. The invention also provides a plasma source in which operating parameters are adjustable in real time. Methods of providing such plasmas and treating an article using such plasmas are also disclosed.

Abstract:

A tire fill nozzle having an integrated dryer for drying compressed air or gas delivered to a tire. According to exemplary disclosed embodiments, the tire fill nozzle comprises a main body, an inlet connector on the main body adapted to engage an air/gas line, an outlet connector on the main body adapted to engage a tire valve stem, and a dryer in the main body adapted to dry air/gas passing through the nozzle. The dryer may comprise a drying composition, such as a desiccant, that can be permanently disposed within the main body or optionally disposed within a replaceable cartridge. Further optional features of the tire fill nozzle include (1) an integrated dryness indicator provided by a dryness indicating material, such as a color-changing desiccant, within a transparent or translucent portion of the nozzle (or an indicating cartridge) such that the dryness indicating material is visible from outside the nozzle, (2) an integrated air/gas filter, (3) a tire valve fitting at the inlet end, (4) a fitting at the outlet end adapted to threadably engage a tire valve stem, and (5) an integrated tire pressure gauge comprising an analog or digital display.

A method is provided for making shaped self-supporting carbon-fiber structure by initially forming a fluid mixture of curable binder and carbon-fiber. The mixture is poured into a mold, and a vacuum is applied to the mold to effect the separation of excess binder.
