Abstract:
A system and method for controlling carbon dioxide (CO) emissions emanating from a gas source includes a COsorbent bed containing a regenerable sorbent. Exhaust gases flow through the COsorbent bed before being released into the atmosphere. The COsorbent bed traps COcontained within the exhaust gas to control the amount of COfinally exhausted to the atmosphere. At least two COsorbent beds are used such that while one is absorbing COfrom the gas stream another is being regenerated. The COsorbent bed is regenerated to release the trapped COfor disposal or use in other processes. The COsorbent beds are cycled between absorbing COand regenerating to optimize absorption of CO.

Abstract:
A carbon dioxide (CO) removal system includes first and second sorbent beds, a heat exchange system and means for reducing pressure. The sorbent beds each have a solid amine sorbent for adsorbing and desorbing CO. At a given time, one of the sorbent beds adsorbs COand the other sorbent bed desorbs CO. The heat exchange system cools the COadsorbing bed and heats the COdesorbing bed so that the temperature of the COdesorbing bed is greater than the temperature of the COadsorbing bed. The means for reducing pressure reduces COpressure at the COdesorbing bed. A method for removing COincludes supplying a gas stream to a sorbent bed containing a solid amine sorbent to adsorb CO, reducing pressure at another sorbent bed to desorb CO, heating the COdesorbing bed, cooling the COadsorbing bed, and removing COfrom the COdesorbing bed.
