Abstract:

A torque transfer assembly including an input gear, a first output shaft, a second output shaft, a planetary differential and a torque control system. In one embodiment, the planetary differential includes first and second planetary gear set pairs each with inner and outer planetary gear sets. The torque control system includes first and second torque control mechanisms each having a control element rotating with one of the planetary gear set components as well as a controller communicating with the first and second control mechanisms and selectively controlling a resistance torque exerted by the first and second torque control mechanisms on the first and second control elements. In another embodiment, the torque control system includes a hydraulic control arrangement hydraulically intercoupling the first and second torque control mechanisms and a controller operable to selectively control the direction and amount of fluid flow in the hydraulic control arrangement and the resistance torque exerted by the first and second torque control mechanisms.

Abstract:

A torque biasing differential including a planetary case rotatable about an axis, a first output shaft rotatable relative to the planetary case, a second output shaft rotatable relative to the planetary case and the first output shaft, and a planetary assembly coupling the planetary case to the first and second output shafts. The planetary assembly includes first and second intermeshed inboard planet gears. The differential also include torque sinks associated with each of the first and second planetary assemblies to selectively distribute torque between the output shafts and control relative shaft rotation. The various embodiments of the torque biasing differential also describe alternative planetary differential configurations relating to the structure, orientation, and interaction of the sun gears, planet gears, and case.

Abstract:

One or more wheels of an electrically powered vehicle contains a motor rotor and a motor stator that is mounted on an integrated structure having a motor stator mounting element portion and wheel axle portion on each side thereof. The structure is fabricated from a unitary non-ferromagnetic substance. A rotor housing is journalled to the axle portion on both sides of the motor stator mounting element via bearings. A wheel assembly is mounted on the rotor housing thereby to be driven by the rotor. Forced-air cooling is provided through a hollow central passage. A plug separates the passage into two distinct sections, the inlet and the outlet. A plurality of cavities, provided with heat exchanger surfaces, are contained within the stator mounting element portion. Channels at each end of each cavity extend in the radial direction into the central passage. Cooling air enters from one end of the central passage, is directed through the inlet channels, the cavities and outlet channels before exiting through the opposite end of the central passage.

Abstract:

An electric motor which has a separate end cap heat exchanger, through which a liquid coolant is passed, is disclosed. In one example embodiment, the electric motor is a traction motor or motor-generator in a hybrid electric vehicle having an internal combustion engine. Additionally, in one embodiment, the heat exchanger has a low-temperature coolant loop configured to extract energy from the motor coolant. The electric motor may be installed in a variety of vehicles or other applications having greatly differing cooling requirements. By placing the heat exchanger and control componentry in the end cap, the cooling capability of the electric motor can be changed by selecting an end cap with the appropriate heat transfer characteristics and control componentry to provide the desired cooling. Consequently, a single electric motor, with a variety of end cap choices, can be used in a variety of applications.

Abstract:

A system and method is provided for electrostatic air filtering in automotive vehicles, such as electric and hybrid electric vehicles. The system includes an electrical distribution system and an electrostatic filtering system having discharge electrodes and an accumulation electrode. The distribution system is in high-voltage electrical communication with the filtering system as well as an electric motor and a high-voltage energy storage device in the vehicle. In operation, the distribution system distributes high-voltage electric power to the filtering system. The filtering system receives the high-voltage electric power to generate a high-voltage electrostatic potential between the accumulation electrode and the discharge electrodes to remove particulates from air flowing through a region of the electrostatic filtering system.

Abstract:

A system and method is provided for indicating an efficiency level of energy usage by an automotive vehicle to a passenger in the vehicle. The system includes a computer-readable storage medium, a controller, an interior-lighting system, and a display unit. The controller processes energy usage signals to obtain the given operating mode of the vehicle as well as indications of energy usage amounts that the passenger can control. The controller determines the efficiency level of energy usage by the vehicle based on the energy usage amounts and the given operating mode. The interior-lighting system illuminates at least a portion of the passenger compartment with ambient light having defined characteristics including a luminance and a color, the ambient light indicating the efficiency level. The display unit displays a graphical representation of the efficiency level.
