Abstract:
Disclosed herein are trimeric polypeptide pharmaceutical compositions comprising three monomers, each monomer comprising a polypeptide having the amino acid sequence of the N-terminal heptad repeat (NHR or HR1) or C-terminal heptad repeat (CHR or HR2) of the transmembrane glycoprotein of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and a trimerization motif.
Systems And Methods For Self-Assembling Ordered Three-Dimensional Patterns By Buckling Of Thin Films Bonded To Curved Compliant Substrates

Abstract:
Self-assembled buckling patterns of thin films on compliant substrates can be used in micro-fabrication. However, most previous work has been limited to planar substrates, and buckling of films on curved substrates has not been widely explored. With the constraining effect from various types of substrate curvature, numerous new types of buckling morphologies can be derived. The morphologies not only enable true three-dimensional (3D) fabrication of microstructures and microdevices, but also can have important implications for the morphogenesis of quite a few natural and biological systems.
In-Phase To Quadrature-Phase Imbalance In An Optical Data Modulator
An apparatus includes an optical source of an optical wavelength carrier, an optical modulator to receive the optical wavelength carrier, and an optical data receiver. The optical data modulator is configured to produce, from the optical wavelength carrier, an optical signal to carry separate data on different first and second components thereof in individual modulation periods during data transmission and to carry a training sequence on one of the components during time slots for calibration. The first component is relatively phase offset from the second component in the optical signal. The optical data modulator alternates the one of the components between the first and second components over the time slots for calibration. The optical receiver is connected to receive a portion of the optical signal and to temporally interleave a measurement of a characteristic of the first component and a measurement of a characteristic of the second component over the time slots for calibration. The optical receiver is configured to feedback information to the optical data modulator based on the measured characteristics. The optical data modulator is configured to reduce an imbalance between the two components of the optical carrier during data transmission based on the information.

Abstract:
Water-responsive actuators and methods for creating water responsive actuators are disclosed. In some embodiments, the disclosed subject matter includes a first layer, for example a plastic tape, and a second layer, for example bacterial spores and cured adhesive. The second layer can be created in a pattern. The pattern can include joints, which can contract when exposed to dry air and can thereby bend the actuator, and can expand when exposed to humid air and thereby return the actuator its original position.

An energy storage device is disclosed that includes an axial structure with two or more rigid energy storage units and conductive flexible components separating adjacent rigid energy storage units. The rigid energy storage units include a plurality of folded layers, including an anode layer, a cathode layer, a first current collector layer, a second current collector layer, one or more separator layers, and one or more tape layers. The adjacent rigid energy storage units are produced by folding the plurality of layers one or more times onto themselves at a plurality of locations along the axial structure. The axial structure is then sealed in an aluminized casing along with an electrolyte material. The energy storage device exhibits high energy density, high foldability, and excellent electrochemical performances by virtue of the folded rigid energy storage segments connected by the flexible components. The conductive flexible component functions in a similar way as the soft marrow between vertebrae in the spine, providing excellent overall flexibility.

Modulation Of Breast Cancer Growth By Modulation Of Xbp1 Activity
Described herein is a previously unknown function of XBP1 in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). It is shown that XBP1 is preferentially spliced and activated in TNBC, and that deletion of XBP1 significantly blocks triple negative breast tumor growth. Strikingly, XBP1 is required for the self-renewal of breast tumor initiating cells (TICs). Genome-wide mapping of the XBP1 transcriptional regulatory network identified a fundamental role for XBP1 in regulating the response to hypoxia via the transcription factor hypoxia-inducible factor 1a (HIF1a). Importantly, activation of this pathway appears to carry prognostic implications, as expression of the XBP1-dependent signature is associated with shorter survival times in human TNBC.
