A method for producing high performance components by the consolidation of powdered materials under conditions of hot isostatic pressure. The method uses the inclusion of reactive materials mixed into pressure-transmitting mold materials and into the powder to be consolidated to contribute to in-situ materials modification including purification, chemical transformation, and reinforcement. The method also uses encapsulation of the mold in a sealed container to retain the mold material in position, and to exclude air and contaminants.

A molten second metal is poured into the mold, where it flows about and covers the beads and is then permitted to cool. This process forms an article made of the second metal, which is mechanically interlocked to the beads, clad by the first metal. Typically the first metal is a high-melting point strong metal, such as steel, and the second metal is a lower-melting point, weaker, but lighter metal, such as aluminum.

A process for separating different products from steelmaking slag includes reducing the average particle size of slag from a steelmaking process into fine particle size material, and separating the fine particle size material into at least an iron rich product and a silicate rich product based on the differences between these products in at least one or more properties including magnetic susceptibility, particle size or specific gravity.
Method For Reducing Iron Oxide And Producing Syngas
A method and apparatus for reducing iron oxides using microwave heating in a furnace chamber which is sealed against the entrance of air reduces the energy required and produces a low temperature reduction and allows the recovery of combustible synthetic gas as a byproduct of the process. Avoidance of the reduction of sulfur, phosphorus and silica is also insured, as is the need to reduce the silica content of the feed material prior to reducing the ore. A continuous rotary hearth furnace, a rotary kiln, a linear conveyor and vertical shaft furnace chamber configurations are described. A secondary heating zone can also be included to process the reduced iron into iron nuggets or liquid metallic iron.

Abstract:
A method of treating spent sorbent from power plants containing materials including mercury absorbed from emission gases comprising putting said spent sorbent in an atmosphere isolated container or furnace chamber and heating said sorbent by microwave, radio frequency and/or infrared irradiation. The sorbent is heated to a temperature of at least the boiling point of the major contaminant, including mercury. No air or purge gas is added except to maintain safe pressure conditions, to control combustion of the sorbent and increase efficiency. The resulting vapor is released through an exhaust port of the chamber that leads to a condenser where mercury is condensed and separated. Other residual vapors are led to a scrubber for further cleansing and may be returned to the power plant for other applications. The hot treated sorbent is cooled down prior to contacting with air for later reuse in the power plant.

Combined microwave heating and plasma/electric arc heating is utilized in several processes and apparatus which involve co-production of pig iron and high quality syngas, biomass to liquid fuel production, coal to liquid fuel production, co-gasification of biomass and coal, municipal solid waste treatment, waste-to-energy (agriculture waste, ASR and PEF), EAF dust and BOF sludge treatment to recover zinc and iron, hazardous bottom ash vitrification, and bromine, chlorine and sulfur removal/recycling.
An automotive disk brake assembly installed in an automobile having a wheel. The assembly includes a floating caliper supporting inner and outer brake pads and a brake rotor having a disk, a hat, wherein the hat is bolted to the wheel. A hydraulic cylinder pushes the inner brake pads into the disk surface, thereby causing the floating caliper to move so as to bring the outer brake pad into contact with the disk surfaces. Finally, the rotor is made of a material having a thickness and a coefficient of thermal expansion and conductivity, such that a complete 100 kilometer per hour, 0.9 gross vehicle weight braking causes the disk to expand in thickness by at least 0.10 mm and to cool to shrink in thickness, from its expanded thickness, by at least 0.05 mm within 60 seconds of cessation of braking, in an ambient temperature of less than 30 C.
