Abstract:
A switching network that utilizes at least three degrees of freedom, time, wavelength and space. In one embodiment that involves point-to-point switching, each space channel between an input and an output is assigned a time slot and wavelength coordinate characteristic of the output and the input transmitter and output receiver are tuned to the appropriate time and wavelength coordinates and selective switching is used to complete the space channel between the input and output. In another embodiment for generalized switching, each input channel is assigned a set of space, time slot and wavelength coordinates and an input signal is broadcast to all of the outputs which selectively makes connection to those inputs with an appropriate set of coordinates.

Abstract:
An ultrafast digital optical signal processor includes a body of a third order nonlinear material and three input beams, two beams counterproprogating in the material on-axis and the third beam propagating off-axis, all simultaneously, to generate an output beam that counterpropogates with respect to the off-axis input beams. A set of three voltage controlled spatial light modulators are used for encoding the three input beams in accordance with a three-set Venn diagram based encoding scheme. The output beam is split into two parts which are decoded separately using a mask for one beam part and a spatial light modulator for the other beam part.

Abstract:
A transient optical element is created by providing a body of a third order non-linear material and then passing a pulse of light through the body of non-linear material. The pulse of light has a cross-sectional area corresponding to the cross-sectional area of the transient optical element to be created and power sufficient to induce an index of refraction change over the portion of the body of non-linear material through which it passes. The portion of the body of non-linear material having the induced index of refraction change constitutes the transient optical element with the duration of the transient optical element depending on the response time of the non-linear material and the duration of pulse of light. Typical optical elements that can be so created include prisms, lenses, gratings, mirrors, beamsplitters and wave guides. By forming a plurality of optical elements within the third order non-linear material rather than simply a single optical element, a transient optical circuit can be created.

Abstract:
An optical theta-modulation based analog-to-digital converter having an acousto-optic deflector and an analog-to-digital conversion mask, for fast and flexible analog-to-digital conversion. The acousto-optic deflector deflects an optical beam at an angle corresponding to an input voltage signal having an analog value. The analog-to-digital conversion mask converts the deflected optical beam into N masked optical signals which each corresponds to a respective bit of a digital value representing the analog value of the input signal. Each optical signal is detected by a photodetector and converted into an output voltage signal by a comparator.

Abstract:
An opto-electronic shared content-addressable memory processor is used to perform parallel modified signed-digit (MSD) arithmetic operations. The MSD arithmetic operation (addition or subtraction of two N-bit numbers) is decomposed into a matrix-matrix multiplication followed by a combination of a threshold and logic operations.

Abstract:
A technique for performing multiplication oriented optical digital computations in which a pair of identical primary frequency coherent beams of light are directed off-axis through a second harmonic generating crystal to produce an on-axis frequency doubled (i. e. second harmonic) output signal. Each primary beam is encoded with one of the quantities to be multiplied producing an output beam containing the product of the two quantities. The output beam is detected by an array type detector. The technique can be used in performing time integration applications as well as spatial integration applications. For space integration applications a cylindrical lens is positioned in front of the array detector. Multistage operations are realized using a parameteric frequency down conversion and amplification scheme.
