Abstract:

A system for ensuring high reliability in a block service disk array system while promoting high performance by logically writing all changes to strides on the array while physically writing ahead to a log only a subset of the changes. Specifically, for changes of only a strip or so, the changes are written to a log, along with a commit record, and then written to disk, later deleting the changes from the log. In contrast, for relatively larger changes, i. e. , for an entire (or nearly entire) stride, the old stride is not overwritten by the new, but rather is written to a new location on the disk, with the new and old locations and a commit record (but not the new stride itself) being logged and with the entries for the locations in the stride mapping table swapped with each other. In an alternate embodiment, blocks can be written to temporary locations in a RAID-1 area and lazily moved to home locations in a RAID-5 area of an array of disks.

Abstract:

A method of writing to cache in a clustered environment. A first node in a storage cluster receives a request to write data from a user application. The first node determines if the data is owned by a remote node. If the data is owned by a remote node, the data in the remote node may be invalidated, if necessary. Such invalidation may not be necessary if a global cache directory is utilized. Thereafter, the data is written in a cache of the first node. Additionally, the data is written in a cache of a partner node of the first node. Confirmation of the cache write in the partner node is then received in the first node.

Abstract:

A method of providing a single system image in a clustered environment. An internet protocol (IP) address is assigned as a cluster IP address. The cluster IP address is bound to a node in a cluster. A client request directed to the cluster IP address is received in the node. The node multicasts the request to all nodes in the cluster. A dynamically adjustable workload distribution function filters the request, wherein the function is configured to allow a single node to process the client request. A response to the request is obtained. A cluster media access control (MAC) address is inserted into the response and the response is sent from the single node to the client.

Abstract:

A system for minimizing downtime in an appliance-based business continuance architecture is provided. The system includes at least one primary data storage and least one primary host machine. The system includes an intercept agent to intercept primary host machine data requests, and to collect information associated with the intercepted data requests. Moreover, at least one business continuance appliance in communication with the primary host machine and in communication with a remote backup site is provided. The appliance receives information associated with the intercepted data requests from the intercept agent. In addition, a local cache is included within the business continuance appliance. The local cache maintains copies of primary data storage according to the information received. Furthermore, the remote site is provided with the intercepted data requests via the business continuance appliance, wherein the remote site maintains a backup of the primary data storage.

An application consistent data protection method provides application-assist and replication-technology neutral mirroring that ensures that a remote data copy is application-consistent. The method comprises a coordination protocol to coordinate application hosts across heterogeneous hosts and heterogeneous storage devices. The method utilizes a disk layout and data record format that enables use of an underlying replication ability of a storage device, minimizing development cost and utilizing customer investment. The method comprises on-demand consistency point initiation to minimize performance impact and maximize system resource usage. The method can be applied to both synchronous and asynchronous mirroring and can be incorporated into any virtualization device.

Abstract:

An apparatus and method to replicate one or more files between non-symmetric storage systems are disclosed. The method supplies a first storage system comprising a first configuration, a first volume, a first file system, and a first replication appliance comprising first replication appliance memory. The method further supplies a second storage system comprising a second configuration, a second volume, a second file system, and a second replication appliance comprising second replication appliance memory, where the first configuration differs from the second configuration. The first storage system receives a dataset, writes that dataset to the first volume as a first file. Applicants' method then replicates the first file to the second volume as a second file, and maintains in the second replication appliance memory a second replication appliance mapping associating the first file with the second file.
