Abstract:

A fishing reel having a frame and an operating mechanism on the frame. The operating mechanism includes a line carrying spool, an element that is rotatable relative to the frame around a first axis to cause line to be directed onto the spool, and a crank handle that is rotatable relative to the frame around a second axis to thereby cause the first element to be rotated around the first axis. The crank handle has a body with a first portion projecting radially in one direction from the second axis, a graspable element on the first body portion, and a counterbalance assembly. The counterbalance assembly includes a second portion of the body which projects radially from the second axis oppositely to the one direction and a first weight element attached to the second portion of the body.

Abstract:

A fishing reel including a housing having a central hub and a main shaft having a proximal end and a distal end, the main shaft being non-rotatably fixed to the central hub at its proximal end. A spool having a central recess is releasably secured to the main shaft distal end and a one-way clutch having a central bore is non-rotatably received in the central recess. The reel also includes a drag assembly with a drag housing having a drag surface and a central aperture, the drag housing being fixed to the central hub of the housing such that a drag cavity is formed therebetween. A sleeve extends along the main shaft and has a first portion received in the central bore of the one-way clutch and a second portion extending into the drag cavity. A first drag washer is disposed in the drag cavity and non-rotatably fixed to the second portion of the sleeve and a drag knob is rotatably secured to the housing. Rotation of the drag knob in a first direction urges the drag washer axially along the sleeve toward the drag surface and increases rotational frictional force on the first drag washer.

Abstract:

A fishing reel includes a clicking mechanism that produces an audible indication when fishing line is payed out from a rotatable line spool. The audible indication is created by the interaction of a clicking member and a flexibly mounted tab. The clicking mechanism is constructed such that the audible indication will not occur as the crank handle is being turned by a user to retrieve the fishing line.

Abstract:

A fishing reel including a housing and a nonrotatable main shaft fixed to the housing. A spool including a one-way clutch having a central bore rotatable about the main shaft is also provided. The reel further includes a sleeve located coaxial to and extending along the main shaft. The sleeve is supported for rotation by first and second bearing assemblies. The first bearing assembly has an inner race fixed with respect to the main shaft and an outer race fixed with respect to an inner surface of the sleeve. The second bearing assembly has an inner race fixed with respect to an outer surface of the sleeve and an outer race fixed with respect to the central hub. At least one drag washer is non-rotatably located on the sleeve. An end of the sleeve adjacent the first bearing assembly is received in the one-way clutch.

Abstract:

A fishing reel with a frame having a first axis and forward and rear ends spaced axially relative to the first axis and an operating mechanism on the frame. The operating mechanism includes a line carrying spool, a rotor that is rotatable around the first axis relative to the frame, a bail assembly on the frame which is changeable between a cast position and a retrieve position, a rotor operator, and a drive train through which the rotor is rotated around the first axis in response to operation of the rotor operator. The operating mechanism further has a bail actuating system for moving the bail assembly from the retrieve position into the cast position. The bail actuating system includes a bail moving assembly which moves in a fore and aft direction relative to the frame, and a motion changing linkage which produces a force on the bail assembly that urges the bail assembly from the retrieve position towards the cast position as an incident of the bail moving assembly moving from a normal position forwardly relative to the frame into an opening position. The bail moving assembly has a portion that cooperates with the frame to guide the bail moving assembly between the normal and opening positions.
