Abstract:

An off-axis Fresnel lens is disclosed that, when combined with a rear projection screen (comprising, e. g. , a lenticular lens, a diffuser, or both), enables construction of rear-projection-type screen devices (e. g. , projection television systems) that are thinner and have improved contrast and resolution when compared with conventional projection screen devices. The off-axis Fresnel lens comprises a plurality of concentric, outwardly-extending, total internal reflection-type prism facets. Each facet, in turn, comprises top and bottom sides, one or both of which may be flat or outwardly convex. Embodiments of the invention may also include concentric opaque sections that are disposed between successive prisms, between the prism base and the output surface of the Fresnel lens, and/or between the output surface of the Fresnel lens and the input surface of the projection screen in order to improve contrast. Contrast may also be enhanced by laminating the Fresnel lens to the projection screen.

Abstract:

An asymmetric twin waveguide (ATG) structure with quantum-well intermixing in the taper region of the active waveguide is disclosed. The structure comprises a first waveguide, a second waveguide, and a taper formed in the second waveguide. The taper has an intermixed area formed therein comprising a plurality of quantum wells intermixed with a plurality of barriers. The quantum wells and barriers may be intermixed using plasma-enhanced intermixing such as, for example, Argon plasma enhanced intermixing. Quantum-well intermixing reduces absorption loss normally encountered in the movement of light between waveguides.

Abstract:

Off-axis total internal reflection Fresnel lenses and projection screens are disclosed that, when combined, enable construction of projection assemblies for rear-projection-type screen devices (e. g. , projection television systems) that are thinner, provide easier handling and maintenance, and have improved contrast, focusing, and resolution when compared with conventional projection screen devices. The off-axis Fresnel lens comprises a plurality of concentric, outwardly-extending, total internal reflection-type prism facets, the top side of which may be aspherical. Embodiments of the invention also include projection screens having at least one diffuser and one lenticular lens. In addition, one or more opaque layers may be used to improve contrast. System and methods for media distribution are described. In one embodiment, a method of media distribution includes rendering of a media to a user, stopping the rendering of the media, and storing remaining media not rendered to the user in a user server. The method further includes receiving a request to stream the remaining media to the user, dividing the remaining media into segments, and assigning a priority to each segment. The remaining media is streamed, leaving out segments with priority lower than a threshold priority.

Abstract:

An image processing method can be performed on a video image that includes an initial frame and a plurality of subsequent frames. An object is located within the initial frame of the video image and a histogram related to the object is generated. A foreground map that includes the object is also generated. For each subsequent frame, a mean shift iteration is performed to adjust the location of the object within the current frame. The histogram related to the object and the foreground map can then be updated.

A method is disclosed for detecting and locating players in soccer video frames without errors caused by artifacts by a shape analysis-based approach to identify the players and the ball from roughly extracted foregrounds obtained by color segmentation and connected component analysis, by performing a Euclidean distance transform to extract skeletons for every foreground blob, by performing a shape analysis to remove false alarms (non-players and non-ball), and then by performing skeleton pruning and a reverse Euclidean distance transform to cut-off the artifacts primarily caused by playing field lines.

Abstract:

According to an implementation, a set of particles is provided for use in estimating a location of a state of a dynamic system. A local-mode seeking mechanism is applied to move one or more particles in the set of particles, and the number of particles in the set of particles is modified. The location of the state of the dynamic system is estimated using particles in the set of particles. Another implementation provides dynamic state estimation using a particle filter for which the particle locations are modified using a local-mode seeking algorithm based on a mean-shift analysis and for which the number of particles is adjusted using a Kullback-Leibler-distance sampling process. The mean-shift analysis may reduce degeneracy in the particles, and the sampling process may reduce the computational complexity of the particle filter. The implementation may be useful with non-linear and non-Gaussian systems.

An implementation provides a method including forming a metric surface in a particle-based framework for tracking an object, the metric surface relating to a particular image in a sequence of digital images.
