Abstract:

The present invention provides a functionally graded glass/ceramic/glass sandwich system especially useful in damage resistant, ceramic dental and orthopedic prosthesis. The functionally graded glass/substrate/glass composite structure comprises an outer (aesthetic) residual glass layer, a graded glass-ceramic layer, and a dense interior ceramic. The functionally graded glass/substrate/glass composite structure may further comprise a veneer on an exterior surface. The present invention also provides a method for preparing a functionally graded glass/ceramic/glass sandwich system. A powdered glass-ceramic composition or a glass tape is applied to the accessible surfaces of a dense alumina substrate to thereby substantially cover the substrate surfaces. The glass of the composition has a CTE similar to that of the substrate material. The glass-ceramic composition is infiltrated into the dense substrate by heating the assembly to temperatures 50-700 C.

Abstract:

The present invention provides a functionally graded glass/ceramic/glass sandwich system for use in damage resistant, ceramic and orthopedic prosthesis. The functionally graded glass/substrate/glass composite structure comprises an outer residual glass layer, a graded glass-ceramic layer, and a dense interior ceramic. The functionally graded glass/substrate/glass composite structure may further comprise a veneer on an exterior surface. The present invention also provides a method for preparing a functionally graded glass/ceramic/glass sandwich system. A powdered glass-ceramic composition is applied to the accessible surfaces of a presintered zirconia substrate to thereby substantially cover the substrate surfaces. The glass of the composition has a CTE similar to that of the substrate material. The glass-ceramic composition is infiltrated into and densifies the substrate by heating the assembly to at least the sintering temperature of the substrate.

Abstract:

Transdermal diffusion cell testing vessel includes a container defining a chamber having an opening against which skin is placed, and a casing arranged partially around and spaced apart from part of the container to define a compartment therebetween. The chamber retains a saline solution and is not in flow communication with the compartment through which water is circulated. The vessel includes separate inlet ports and outlet ports, each including a conduit communicating with the chamber or compartment. The outlet port of the chamber is angled downward relative to a horizontal upper surface of the container against which skin being tested is placed. The vessel is used for conducting transdermal diffusion cell testing in combination with a solution source fluidly coupled to each vessel, a waste receptacle fluidly coupled to each vessel, a syringe pump fluidly coupled to a respective vessel, and a sample collector fluidly coupled to the syringe pump(s).

Abstract:

The present invention provides a functionally graded bioactive glass/ceramic composite structure or bioactive glass/ceramic/bioactive glass sandwich structure for use in such applications as damage resistant, ceramic dental implants, immediate tooth replacement, endodontic posts, orthopedic prostheses, orthopedic stems, bone substitutes, bone screws, plates, and anchors, nonunion fractures repair, alveolar ridge augmentation, missing small bone parts (e.g. fingers, toes, etc), maxilla facial reconstruction, spinal fusion, and scaffolds for bone regeneration, comprising a residual bioactive glass or glass-ceramic layer at all accessible surfaces, followed by an underlying graded glass-ceramic layer, and then an dense interior ceramic. The residual bioactive glass or glass-ceramic layer can be further transformed to a carbonate apatite (CHA) layer by immersing in calcifying solution or simulated body fluid (SBF) with electrolyte composition similar to that of serum. The interior ceramic preferably contains yttria-tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (Y-TZP) or ceria stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (Ce-TZP) or magnesia stabilized zirconia (Mg-PSZ) or calcia stabilized zirconia (Ca-PSZ) or alumina or zirconia-alumina composites. Further, the invention provides methods for making the same functionally graded bioactive glass/ceramic composite structure or graded bioactive glass/ceramic/bioactive glass sandwich structure.
