Abstract:

A wireless telephone unit of the present invention has an improved shuttle for more ergonomically and efficiently entering input to the telephone unit. The shuttle, acting as a rotary encoder, controls the scrolling of material across a display of the wireless telephone unit. The shuttle is located on the face of the wireless telephone unit so as to be operated by the thumb of a user without regard to whether the telephone unit is held in the right or left hand of the user. The shuttle further comprises a detent mechanism such that increments of rotation of the shuttle passed the detent mechanism are perceptible to the user and are correlated to an amount of material scrolled across the display. The shuttle is also displacable along its access of rotation to input parameter information to the wireless telephone unit. The telephone units keypad may be hidden in the unit when not in use.

Abstract:

A virtual dialer allows a wireless telephone unit to dispense with a numeric keypad, thereby allowing additional room for an enhanced display without sacrificing the compactness of the unit. The virtual dialer includes a short joystick and an image of a telephone numeric keypad displayed on a display. The joystick is used to move a cursor around on the image of the numeric keypad. The joystick or a selection button is pressed when the cursor highlights the image of the numeric key representing the digit to be entered. In this way, a phone number to be called is dialled without the presence of an actual numeric keypad.

A wireless telephone unit may be provided with an extension which pivots out from behind the unit or opens and closes over the face of the unit. The extension is used as a place to provide a variety of peripheral devices to supplement or enhance the functionality of the wireless telephone unit. Abstract:

An improved wireless telephone including a main body having a generally rectangular shape, the main body further including a first surface and a first width. The first surface having disposed thereon a plurality of input data entry keys, a visual display, a plurality of function entry keys, and a microphone. A speaker is mechanically coupled to the main body. A means for grasping the wireless telephone or a grasping device is coupled to the main body. The means for grasping or the grasping device also includes a first surface and a second surface, the first surface having an undulating surface including a plurality of alternately disposed flat and concave portions, and the second surface being generally convex or curved. The means for grasping or the grasping device is rotatably connected to the main body, is aligned along or parallel to a longitudinal axis of the wireless telephone, and further includes a second width which is narrower than the first width. The means for grasping or the grasping device is attached to the wireless telephone in such a manner such that a wrist of a user of the wireless telephone is maintained in a neutral position while the wireless telephone is operated as a telephone.
