Abstract:

Improved tennis racket in which an inverted chevron shaped yoke is provided having downward sloping side portions which match the curvature of the arcuate top portion of the racket head to provide vertical strings extending between the yoke and arcuate top portion which are of the same length. The equal length of vertical strings provide uniform elastic response to ball impact. The particular design of the chevron provides added structural strength to the neck of the racket. An improved racket made from a polycrystalline metal oxide fiber and resin matrix is also disclosed. In addition, an improved string protection system involving elastomer inserts which are molded into the head portion of composite material rackets is described.

Abstract:

A frame structure adapted for use as a tennis racket. The frame structure includes a frame body made from either wood, metal or plastic having a tubular structure with inside and outside surfaces. A composite material jacket having an outer layer adjacent and bonded to the frame outside surface and an inner layer adjacent and bonded to the frame body inside surface is provided. The composite material jacket is made from composite materials such as resin impregnated boron, graphite, polyamide aromatic and glass fibers. In addition, plastic throat pieces commonly used to connect and support racket necks and handles are replaced by composite material cross-member supports which are integrally molded to the composite material jacket. The composite material jacket provides structural reinforcement as well as desirable shock and vibration dampening characteristics. In addition, the tubular frame is provided with elongated slots through which racket strings are attached for mounting.

Abstract:

A golf club head including a lightweight composite material molded to a hard, high density material to provide selected distribution and localization of mass within the golf club head. The lightweight composite material provides desirable properties of strength and stiffness to the club head hosel and blade portions while the hard, high density material provides necessary club weight, mass distribution, structure and shape. The use of lightweight composite material in combination with high density material allows placement of the club mass substantially entirely in the blade or head portion to provide enhanced energy transfer. Club heads utilizing ceramic fiber and/or ceramic particles are also disclosed. The club head may include a central foam core surrounded by a rigid shell including resin impregnated fibers and ceramic particles dispersed in the resin.

Abstract:

A tubular frame structure adapted for use as a tennis racket which includes an elastic polymer core which is bonded to and surrounded by a rigid shell of graphite composite. The elastic polymer core is a flexible vinyl foam prepared from plasticized polyvinyl chloride in which a suitable blowing agent is dispersed. A method for preparing the racket structure is disclosed. The elastic polymer core provides a particularly desirable core material which does not degrade or breakdown during prolonged use and provides enhanced racket shock and vibration absorption, and, most importantly, the means to obtain the desirable variable density characteristics at the desired locations within the structure of racquet without a corresponding reduction in structural capability.

Abstract:

A tubular frame structure adapted for use as a tennis racket having a rigid outer shell of composite material and an inner reinforced foam core including a foam portion and honeycomb reinforcement layers. The honeycomb reinforcement layers are oriented so that string holes passing through the frame pass through the foam core and rigid shell, but do not pass through the honeycomb layers. The use of honeycomb reinforcement layers is particularly well suited for use with elastic polymer foam cores.
