Abstract:
An instrument guide that can compensate for surgical instruments that have different outer diameters. The instrument guide includes a shaft that has an inner channel adapted to receive a surgical instrument. The guide also has a leaf that can be deflected relative to the shaft to exert a spring force onto the instrument. The amount of leaf deflection is dependent upon the outer diameter of the surgical instrument.

A retractor with devices that allow a surgeon to control the amount of retractor force. The retractor may include a first blade and a second blade. The second blade can be moved by a gear mechanism. A torque measuring device, force measuring device and/or slip clutch may be coupled to the gear mechanism. The torque measuring device may have a readout that displays the amount of torque being applied by the surgeon to the retractor. The readout provides accurate feedback that allows the surgeon to gauge the amount of force being applied to the patient. Likewise the force measuring device may provide a visual indication of the actual force being applied by the retractor onto the patient. The slip clutch may actuate at a threshold torque to prevent an excessive exertion of force on a patient.

Abstract:
Implantation of an accommodating intraocular lens in an eye may require the accurate measurement of the size, circumference, or diameter of the capsular bag of the eye. A flexible ring or ring portion may be temporarily or permanently inserted into the capsular bag for measuring the circumference of the capsular bag, for example, after extraction of a natural lens from the capsular bag. The ring or ring portion is generally compressible to fit through a surgical incision, then expands to fill the capsular bag along an equatorial region. The ring or ring portion includes a central component that changes shape and/or angle as the ring or ring portion is compressed. The shape change is generally correlated to the size of the capsular bag and may be visually measured through the cornea, the measurement being generally independent of corneal magnification. The measurement may be used to determine or calculate information about the capsular bag such as its size, elasticity, accommodative range, and so forth.
