John Strachan ( bishop of Brechin ) " John Strachan " ( died 1810 ) was an Anglicanism clergyman who served in the Scottish Episcopal Church as the Bishop of Brechin from 1788 to 1810 He was Consecration the Coadjutor Bishop of the Diocese of Brechin ( Episcopal ) at Peterhead on 26 September 1787 by Primus Robert Kilgour and bishops Robert Keith ( historian ) and Andrew Macfarlane.

He is best remembered for the " Thesaurus Palaeohibernicus ", a collection of material in Old Irish that he edited together with Whitley Stokes ( scholar ), and for the textbook " Old Irish Paradigms and Selections from the Old Irish Glosses ", first published in 1904–05 and later revised by Osborn Bergin.

Born in Montrose, Angus, Scotland, to engineer John Strachan and Sarah, " née " Delarne, Strachan's family moved to England in 1853 where he studied engineering before running away to sea, fighting for the United States of America in the American Civil War, sailing on the trade routes from India to Japan, whaling in the Arctic, advising the Prince of Higo in Japan, and managing guano workings on Baker Island....
He arrived in Tasmania on 25 April 1872 as mate of the " Rita ", and on 3 March 1875 married Alice Sarah Henrietta Plummer at Launceston, Tasmania.
