Abstract:

A method and apparatus for scheduling electronic calendar events using a facsimile transmission. The invention may be initiated using a designated facsimile transmission sheet or sheets which can invoke a specified electronic calendar operation. A data processing system, upon reception of the facsimile transmission sheet, interprets the sheet for a specified electronic calendar operation. Upon validation of specified operations, the operations are directed to an electronic calendar for processing. In addition, specified facsimile images from the facsimile transmission may be associated with a calendar event or events. Upon an originators request, confirmation on the status of the electronic operations are directed to specified facsimile devices.

Abstract:

A method and apparatus for correlating the transmission of audio-video segments to digital signatures over a wireless or non-wireless medium to allow for real-time substitution and processing of audio and video programs. In one embodiment at least one digital signature having a correlated audio-video segment is transmitted as a digital waveform within an analog modulated signal representing the audio-video segment. The analog modulated signal is transmitted to a wireless receiver. The wireless receiver demodulates the digital waveforms while concurrently playing the correlated audio-video segment. An electronic user interface enables the wireless receiver to define conditional preferences to actively scan a plurality of channels and Internet addresses to substitute a currently playing audio-video segment with a preferred audio-video segment. In an alternative embodiment, a distributed computer network is the broadcast system transmitting digital signatures to either a wireless or non-wireless computer.

Temporal based objects, such as video or audio objects, are presented in a manner that is determined by the context through which the object is presented. When presented through one context, the object is presented in accordance with one set of presentation characteristics. When presented through another context, the object is presented in accordance with another set of presentation characteristics. A context can be an application program such as a calendar program or an inbasket program, or a context can be an output device such as a video monitor. Presentation characteristics determine which segments of an object are to be presented and how they are to be presented (such as by playing, pause play, fast forward, fast forward play, rewind, rewind play and stop play).

Abstract:

The method and apparatus of the present invention permit users to associate conditions of interest, such as keywords or originator identities. In response to the sending of a message, the data processing system determines which user conditions are met by the message input into the system and may associate the identities of such users with the message. In one embodiment, the system returns to the sender of the message the identities of users whose conditions are met by the message. In another embodiment, the system routes the message to users whose conditions are met by the message and, optionally, returns a confirmation of the delivery of the message to the sender. In either embodiment, a user can designate himself as "invisible", so that the system will not report the invisible user's identity to the sender.

Abstract:

A method is disclosed for automatically deleting a temporary document relationship within a data processing system. A relationship between one document and one or more documents is specified as a temporary document relationship. Thereafter, each time a document is to be deleted from the data processing system, all relationships of that document are examined to determine if any have been specified as temporary document relationships. After all documents linked to a selected document by a temporary document relationship have been deleted, the selected document itself is automatically deleted by the system. In this manner, a temporary electronically designated folder may be created to store a plurality of documents in a linear and hierarchical manner. After the last document within the folder has been deleted, the folder itself is automatically deleted by this system. Similarly, a temporary stapler document relationship may be created by stapling a first document to a second document.
