Reflectance Method For Evaluating The Surface Characteristics Of Opaque Materials
Randhir P. S. Thakur - San Jose CA Michael Nuttall - Meridian ID J. Brett Rolfson - Boise ID Robert James Burke - Boise ID
Assignee:
Micron Technology, Inc. - Boise ID
International Classification:
G01B 1130
US Classification:
356600, 356 51, 356445, 2503581
Abstract:
Disclosed is a process for analyzing the surface characteristics of opaque materials. The method comprises in one embodiment the use of a UV reflectometer to build a calibration matrix of data from a set of control samples and correlating a desired surface characteristic such as roughness or surface area to the set of reflectances of the control samples. The UV reflectometer is then used to measure the reflectances of a test sample of unknown surface characteristics. Reflectances are taken at a variety of angles of reflection for a variety of wavelengths, preferably between about 250 nanometers to about 400 nanometers. These reflectances are then compared against the reflectances of the calibration matrix in order to correlate the closest data in the calibration matrix. By so doing, a variety of information is thereby concluded, due to the broad spectrum of wavelengths and angles of reflection used. This includes information pertaining to the roughness and surface area, as well as other surface characteristics such as grain size, grain density, grain shape, and boundary size between the grains.

A vehicle utilize a cellular design to provide variously sized vehicles constructed from varying numbers of substantially identical cells. Each cell, fabricated from lightweight materials including composites, includes: compartment, floor section, sidewalls, roof, drive train, steering, brakes; and wheels coupled through axles and independent suspensions to the vehicle body, each suspension including a height adjuster, a flow-control shock absorber, and a rapid-response air spring for and exceptionally comfortable ride. The suspension system reduces structural requirements for the body. All-wheel steering lends the vehicle exceptionally high maneuverability. A hybrid power system combines an alternative fueled engine to power electricity generation and all-wheel electric drive with main energy storage in advanced battery technology. The cellular design and attendant weight reduction allow suspensions and drive trains to be substantially fabricated from light truck parts. A control system cooridnates and regulates the several sub-systems based on a variety of inputs.
System For Regulating Access To And Distributing Content In A Network
Robert Burke - Los Gatos CA, US David Carman - San Jose CA, US

US Classification:

Abstract:
There is provided a system for regulating access and managing distribution of content in a network, such as the Internet. The system includes communication gateways, installed at a subscriber site, internet control points, installed remotely, and various network elements installed throughout the network. The communication gateways and network elements operate in conjunction with the internet control points to restrict or allow access to specified Internet sites and to manage efficient distribution of content such as music, video, games, broadband data, real-time audio and voice applications, and software to subscribers.
Lightweight wheeled surface vehicles of various types and sizes constructed chiefly from commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) parts, incorporate alternate suspensions, e.g. swingarms. One embodiment provides a vehicle incorporating a cellular body design wherein the vehicle is constructed from a varying number of substantially identical cells, assembled end-to-end to produce vehicles of varying size and capacity. Additional embodiments include lightweight passenger vehicles, such as automobiles, manufacturable from COTS parts, including independent suspensions providing large vertical wheel travel. One embodiment provides an automobile-type vehicle having a roll-cage frame, and a lightweight, exo-skeleton external frame, provided in multiple wheel configurations, e.g. three- or four-wheeled configurations. Body panels are quickly and easily attached to the tubular frame and also easily removed and switched and readily replaceable. Bicycles are equipped with electric pedal assist units. Additionally, a pneumatic pedal assist reduces peak power requirements and prolongs battery life.

Abstract:
A single-pass heavy-ion fusion system includes a new arrangement of current multiplying processes that employs multiple isotopes to achieve the desired effect of distributing the task of amplifying the current among all the various processes, to relieve stress on any one process, and to increase margin of safety for assured ICF (inertial confinement fusion) power production. Energy and power of the ignition-driver pulses are greatly increased, thus increasing intensity of target heating and rendering reliable ignition readily attainable. The present design eliminates the need for storage rings. Further innovations are to give the HIF (heavy ion fusion) Driver flexibility to drive multiple chambers in the most general case of different total distances between the linac output and each of the various chambers. Using multiple chambers steeply decreases the pro-rata capital investment and operating costs per power production unit, in turn decreasing the cost of power to users.

Abstract:
A single-pass heavy-ion fusion system for power production from fusion reactions alone, power production that uses additional energy of fission reactions obtained by driving a sub-critical fission pile with the neutrons from fusion reactions, destroying high-level and/or long-lived radioactive waste by intense bombardment with fusion neutrons, or for the production of neutron beams for various applications includes a new arrangement of current multiplying processes that employs a multiplicity of isotopes to achieve the desired effect of distributing the task of amplifying the current among all the various processes, to relieve stress on any one process, and to increase the design margin for assured ICF (inertial confinement fusion) ignition for applications including but not restricted to the above list. The energy content and power of the ignition-driver pulses are greatly increased, thus increasing intensity of target heating and rendering reliable ignition readily attainable.
