Viaduct inspection reveals new and widening cracks
They're really small hairline cracks, said WSDOT spokesperson Travis Phelps. When I say widen I don't mean big gaping holes you can put your hand in. The viaduct is safe or we wouldn't have reopened it after inspection.
Spokesman Travis Phelps says no new settling was measured. The viaduct has been regularly inspected since the 2001 Nisqually earthquake and it has settled more than 5 inches at one spot near Yesler Way.
15 feet 9 inches tall, even though the outer edges of the bridge had a clearance of less than 15 feet. DOT did add a qualification that the agency does not guarantee the height clearances, and DOT spokesman Travis Phelps said it is the company's responsibility to ensure that the load safely passes.
DOT spokesman Travis Phelps said the agency puts out the caution notifications on some areas that have had clearance problems in the past - but that not every clearance height is noted. The state didn't consider the Skagit bridge to be particularly problematic.
What won't be allowed are trucks that require a special permit to travel on state highways because they exceed legal rules for height, width, weight or length, said Travis Phelps, a Washington Department of Transportation spokesman.
The NTSB has not yet finished its site investigation, but a contractor has started assembling a temporary span that can be rolled into position to replace the collapsed section, DOT spokesman Travis Phelps said.
