Abstract:

Systems and procedures may be used to coordinate the fail-back of multiple hosts in environments where the hosts share one or more data-storage resources. In one implementation, a procedure for coordinating fail-backs includes monitoring a failed data path to detect a restoration of the data path, polling remaining nodes in response to the restoration, and allowing the first node to resume communications if access has been restored to the remaining nodes.

Abstract:

A computer-implemented method for handling path failures to active-passive storage arrays may include identifying a host system with multiple I/O paths to an active-passive storage array. The computer-implemented method may also include identifying a backup system operating for the host system, the backup system having multiple I/O paths to the active-passive storage array. The computer-implemented method may also include disabling at least one secondary path from the backup system to the active-passive storage array. The computer-implemented method may further include detecting a path failure. The computer-implemented method may additionally include reconfiguring the backup system to access the active-passive storage array through the host system. Various other methods, systems, and computer-readable media are also disclosed.

Techniques for reducing data storage needs using continuous data protection and replication are disclosed. In one particular exemplary embodiment, the techniques may be realized as a method for reducing data storage needs using a continuous data protection and replication device comprising creating a master image of material identified by a user, generating a virtual replica of the master image on a storage area network using the continuous data protection and replication device to virtualize physical storage containing the master image, generating a copy of the virtual replica on the storage area network, and providing a virtual logical unit number to access the copy, wherein the access enables a process which requires exclusive access to content of the master image to obtain such access without requiring physical storage for an entire copy of the master image.

Abstract:

A computer-implemented method for managing cluster node connectivity information. The method may include maintaining a set of cluster nodes of a clustered application. The method may also include, for each node in a set of cluster nodes, determining a connectivity state of the cluster node and transmitting, from the cluster node to non-volatile Random Access Memory (“RAM”) of a cluster disk, connectivity information that indicates the connectivity state of the cluster node. The method may further include accessing, from a remote system, the non-volatile RAM of the cluster disk to retrieve connectivity information of one or more cluster nodes from the set of cluster nodes. The method may include using the connectivity information to inform the remote system of the connectivity state of the one or more cluster nodes. Abstract:

A method includes assigning a port identifier to a first port on a node and communicating data on a first path between the first port and a logical unit on an active/passive storage array. The port identifier is registered in a persistent reservation scheme for the logical unit. The method also includes detecting a failure of the first path, de-assigning the port identifier from the first port, assigning the port identifier to a second port on the first node, and resuming communications between the node and the logical unit. One implementation of a system includes a first port configured to communicate with a storage device, a second port configured to communicate with the storage device, and an identifier management block. The identifier management block executes a failover with N_Port ID Virtualization commands that transfer a world wide port name from the first port to the second port.
