Abstract:
A system, method, and various software products provide for consistent identification of web users across multiple web sites, servers and domains, monitoring and capture of data describing the users' web activities, categorization of the web activity data, aggregation of the data into time dependent models describing interest of users and groups over time. Categorization is made with respect to a category tree which may be standardized or customized for each web site. User groups may be defined based on membership rules for category interest information and demographics. Individual user profiles are then created for users automatically based on satisfaction of the user group membership rules. As new data is collected on a user over time, the category interest information extracted from the user's web activity is updated to form a current model of the user's interests relative to the various categories. This information is also used to automatically update group membership and user profile information.

Abstract:
A method for estimating the state-of-charge of a battery. The method includes collecting a plurality of voltage measurements during operation of the system containing the battery and determining a time-constant of relaxation and an open-circuit voltage corresponding to the battery based, at least in part, on the voltage measurements. The method further includes estimating the state-of-charge of the battery based, at least in part, on the open-circuit voltage.

Abstract:
A method and apparatus for determining the state-of-charge of a battery. In response to detecting that the battery is in a rest state, a pre-conditioning current is drawn from the battery to affect a correlation between the state-of-charge of the battery and an open-circuit voltage of the battery. Thereafter, the open-circuit voltage of the battery is measured, and used to determine the state-of-charge.

Abstract:
A battery pack management system adjusts the relative state-of-charge of respective battery blocks in a battery pack to equalize (i.e., align, balance or otherwise make similar) the peak battery block voltages (i.e., maximum or “upper peak” battery block voltages when the battery pack is being charged and/or minimum or “lower peak” battery block voltages when the battery is being discharged). Upon detecting an anomalous battery block that exhibits outlier upper and lower peak voltages, the battery pack management system adjusts the relative state of charge of respective battery blocks to center their respective upper and lower peak voltages between operating limits, thus maximizing the operating margin of the battery pack as a whole.

Abstract:
Techniques are disclosed performing a power logging in a computer system at a sub-process level. An exemplary method includes an operating system of the computer system determining process information indicative of which sub-portions of one or more processes are running on the computer system at different points in time, as well as may determining power information for the computer system at different points in time. The operating system may the create, from the process information and the power information, a power log indicative of power usage of sub-portions of processes at a plurality of points in time. The power logging may extend to both core and non-core resources of the system. For non-core resources, the power usage may be estimated in some cases based on the type of non-core resource being called as well as parameters passed to the non-core resource.
The novel process, called "autoperforation," is described in a paper published today in the journal Nature Materials, by MIT Professor Michael Strano, postdoc Pingwei Liu, graduate student Albert Liu, and eight others at MIT.Apart from the syncells' potential uses for industrial or biomedical monitoring, the way the tiny devices are made is itself an innovation with great potential, according to Albert Liu. "This general procedure of using controlled fracture as a production method can be extended across many length scaThis is, Albert Liu says, "one of the only ways available right now to produce stand-alone integrated microelectronics on a large scale" that can function as independent, free-floating devices. Now, Strano and his team including grad students Sayalee Mahajan and Albert Liu have gone a step further, increasing the efficiency of this technique more than a thousandfold. In other words, they have produced devices that can put out power similar to what can be produced by todays best batteries.
