Abstract:

The present invention is directed to an electrodepositable composition of a resinous phase dispersed in an aqueous medium. The resinous phase includes an ionic polyester polymer prepared from a) an aromatic and/or cycloaliphatic carboxylic acid compound having at least two aromatic and/or secondary aliphatic carboxyl groups, b) a branched aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or araliphatic compound containing at least two aliphatic hydroxyl groups, the aliphatic hydroxyl groups being either secondary or tertiary hydroxyl groups or primary hydroxyl groups attached to a carbon adjacent to a tertiary or quaternary carbon, c) a compound including an ionic salt group or a group which is converted to an ionic salt group, and d) optionally, at least one hydroxyl substituted carboxylic compound comprising at least one tertiary aliphatic carboxyl group and at least two aliphatic hydroxyl groups. The present invention also includes a method for electrocoating a conductive substrate with the described electrodepositable composition. Lastly, the present invention is directed to a conductive substrate coated according to the described method.

Abstract:

The present invention relates to an electrodepositable coating composition having a resinous phase dispersed in an aqueous medium. The resinous phase includes (a) an ungelled, active hydrogen-containing, ionic salt group-containing resin; and (b) a curing agent reactive with the active hydrogens of the resin (a). The resinous phase has a covalently bonded halogen content based on total weight of resin solids present in the resinous phase such that when the composition is electrodeposited and cured, the cured film passes flame resistance testing in accordance with IPC-TM-650, and has a dielectric constant of less than or equal to 3. 50. The invention also is directed to a method for forming a dielectric coating on an electroconductive substrate using the electrodepositable coating composition, as well as to a substrate coated with the electrodepositable composition.

The invention provides a photodegradation resistant curable electrodepositable coating composition which includes one or more ungelled, active hydrogen-containing cationic sulfonium salt group-containing resins which are electrodepositable on a cathode, and one or more curing agents having cationic groups or groups which are capable of forming cationic groups. The invention also provides processes for coating an electroconductive substrate with the coating composition, to form single layer or multi-layer composite coatings. Also provided is a multi-layer composite coating in which the electrodepositable coating composition is used to form the primer layer. The compositions have improved throw power versus typical sulfonium salt electrodepositable compositions.

Abstract:

The present invention is directed to a method for coating a substrate comprising: (a) applying a caustic cleaner onto at least a portion of the substrate; (b) rinsing at least a portion of the substrate that was subjected to step (a) with water; (c) applying an acid cleaner onto at least a portion of the caustically cleaned substrate; (d) rinsing at least a portion of the substrate that was subjected to step (c) with water; and (e) applying a conversion coating comprising zirconium onto at least a portion of the acid cleaned substrate; and wherein at least one of the materials used in steps (c) and (e) is substantially chrome free. The present invention is also directed to a substrate, such as an aluminum substrate, that has been coated using the aforementioned method.

Methods for producing 1,5,7-triazabicyclo[4.4.0]dec-5-ene using a disubstituted carbodiimide, dipropylene triamine and optionally an ethereal solvent and/or an alcohol are disclosed. Use of 1,5,7-triazabicyclo[4.4.0]dec-5-ene produced by this method in an electrodepositable coating composition, and electrophoretic deposition of such coating onto a substrate to form a coated substrate, are also disclosed.
