Abstract:
An improved artificial mechanical heart valve prosthesis having an improved leaflet hinge mechanism which improves washing of the hinge recess, reduces leaflet closing impact force and decreases noise and wear. A generally annular valve body having an annular interior surface extending between an inflow rim and an outflow rim thereof defines an annular orifice therethrough. A pair of leaflets are supported on said annular valve body for alternately blocking blood flow in an inflow direction when seated against the annular interior side wall in a closed position and then allowing the flow of blood through said annular orifice in a predetermined blood outflow direction when rotated into an open position.

Abstract:
A heart valve sewing prosthesis including an intrinsically conductive polymer. The invention includes annuloplasty rings and bands, and sewing rings or cuffs for prosthetic heart valves. Some annuloplasty rings and sewing rings include fabric that is coated with an intrinsically conductive polymer. The coating can be formed over individual filaments or fibers, or on the fabric surface as a surface layer. One intrinsically conductive polymer is polypyrrole. The intrinsically conductive polymer can be doped to facilitate the intrinsic conductivity. Some devices have a polypyrrole surface layer doped with dialkyl-napthalene sulfonate. The intrinsically conductive polymer can be deposited on a fabric using in-situ polymerization of monomeric or oligomeric species, together with a dopant. Animal studies using implanted annuloplasty rings having an intrinsically conductive polymer coating have demonstrated a substantial reduction in pannus formation and inflammatory response.

Abstract:
A self-retaining suture has a suture thread less than 1 millimeter nominal diameter. A plurality of retainers is cut into the suture thread using a high accuracy retainer cutting machine. The retainer cutting machine has sufficient accuracy and repeatability to cut consistent and effective retainers at high density on suture threads less than 1 mm nominal diameter.

Abstract:
Self-retaining suture systems including a suture thread bearing a plurality of laser-cut retainers are disclosed. A laser system allows the creation of retainers and self-retaining suture systems in configurations which are difficult and/or impossible to achieve using mechanical cutting technology.
An annuloplasty ring having an adjustable configuration. The ring takes the form of a tubular sleeve surrounding frame members which be deflected by means of drawstrings.
A mitral valve is removed from a pig heart with the annulus, leaflets, cordae tendineae and papillary heads intact. The porcine mitral valve is fixed. A covering material is attached to the papillary heads around the cordae tendineae. A sewing tube of a flexible material is attached to each of the papillary heads by sutures that extend through the covering material. The sewing tube extends away from the porcine mitral valve's papillary head renmants. A covering material is attached to the annulus. A human heart with a diseased or damaged human mitral valve is imaged in vivo to size the length between the mitral valve annulus and the papillary heads. The porcine mitral valve annulus to sewing tube length is adjusted to match the like dimension in the human heart by trimming the sewing tube. The human heart is opened and the mitral valve excised. The human heart's cordae tendineae are removed leaving the papillary heads intact.

Abstract:
A temporary holder for a physiologic mitral valve includes a structure which releasably clamps the annulus of the valve between the rim of a plate and a snap ring. The structure also includes a pair of papillary head holders which hold the papillary heads of the valve at a predetermined distance and angle from the annulus plate for optimum surgical positioning. The papillary heads are temporarily sutured to their holders and can be released by a simple scalpel stroke.
