Abstract:
A method for making a smooth ceramic including loading ceramic powder to be densified into a hot press die, placing one or more spacers with a polished surface between a hot press punch and the ceramic powder, placing the die and punch into a hot press and hot pressing the ceramic powder, and removing a smooth ceramic shape that requires no subsequent polishing or processing and has a surface roughness of 5 nm RMS or better. The smooth ceramic shape may be transparent, and it may be spinel, magnesia, yttria, lutetia, scandia, YAG, any composites thereof, or any of their rare earth doped compounds. Also disclosed is the related smooth ceramic made by this process.

Abstract:
Disclosed is a method of flash sintering a sample composed of ceramic particles by providing laser energy to change the electrical properties of the ceramic material. The processes and systems disclosed herein do not require large heating equipment like a furnace allowing for a portable system of repairing ceramic materials in the field.
Systems And Methods For Providing A Lightweight Firearm Accessory To Enhance Stability Of The Firearm In Shooting Positions
A detachable firearm accessory is provided to enhance stability of a shooting position when attached to the forestock of a firearm. Configurations of a detachable leg bipod system or device provide for the legs of the bipod system or device to be removable and separately stowable with the bipod system, or apart from the bipod system, in order to potentially reduce the weight, and/or streamline the protruding profile/parts, of the bipod system or device remaining attached to the forestock of the firearm for carriage. Removability of the legs may otherwise enhance or increase the flexibility for the shooter in his or her ability to differentially employ the particularly-configured base or connection portion of the bipod system or device, apart from the legs, as one or more of a barricade stop, or a sill or frame saddle stop.

Abstract:
A transparent composite armor is made of tens to hundreds or even thousands of thin layers of material each with a thickness of 10-500 μm. An appropriate amount of impedance mismatch between the layers causes some reflection at each interface but limit the amplitude of the resulting tensile wave below the tensile strength of the constituent materials. The result is an improvement in ballistic performance and that will result is a significant impact in reducing size, weight, and volume of the armor.

Abstract:
A method of purifying a spinel powder includes contacting a spinel powder with an acid solution to form an acid-washed spinel composition and contacting the acid-washed spinel composition with a basic solution to form a purified composition. The purified powder is suited to formation of low-absorption shaped bodies, such as windows for high intensity laser devices.

Abstract:
A system and method are provided for employing man-portable unitary platform system segments, particularly as components of integrated castle defense systems. A lightweight modular and mobile system of integrated platform segments is provided to facilitate users integrating flexible platform configurations secured to existing wall structures to support myriad user tasks. Individual platform system segments can be autonomously employed, or can be linked together after being quickly attached to a wall, a structure, or another supporting surface by two users in minimal time. In law enforcement, security, military and/or paramilitary employment scenarios, individual platform system segments are emplaced, and linked together, to provide a unitary defensible position in a matter of minutes. An overall platform structure of a plurality of individual man-portable platform system segments provides operational and employment flexibility that was previously unattainable to bolster or boost defenses of a particular position against increasing, and increasingly agile, threats.
