Abstract:
The present invention relates to an apparatus and method for disease detection. The apparatus and method use a radiation source to irradiate a sample. An analyzer measures the absorption and/or emission spectra from the sample to detect the presence of the disease state in the sample. In this regard, a comparator may compare the measured spectra with the spectrum of a control. Analysis of the parameters of the spectra including, but not limited to, peak intensity wavelength, amplitude at the peak intensity, area ratio of left and right portions of the emission spectra, and shifts of the peak intensity wavelength, allows determination of HIV infection, Hepatitis A, B and C, and other diseases. Selective absorbents, such as C-M Affi Gel Blue and activated charcoal, may be used to treat the samples before measurements, which is found to improve discrimination of diseased and non-diseased samples. The present invention is capable of detecting HIV infection at a stage when it is still undetectable by conventional diagnosis methods.
A system and method of disinfecting and/or decontaminating articles such as pieces of mail that have been exposed to diverse biological and/or chemical contaminants. The system includes an enclosure having a door, an input port, and an output port, a mail tumbling drum, a radiation beam source and applicator, an electromagnetic field source and applicator, an ultraviolet radiation source and applicator, a chemical decontamination unit, and a status indicator. The enclosure door is opened, a quantity of mail is placed in the tumbling drum inside the enclosure, and the door is closed. At the end of a predetermined delay time, radiation beams, electromagnetic fields, ultraviolet radiation, and chemical decontaminates are applied to the mail for a predetermined time, and in predetermined combinations and sequences, thereby destroying essentially all biological viruses, bacteria, spores, pollutants, and bomb material that may be on or within the pieces of mail. The mail box processor is configured to minimize leakage so that contaminating substances harmful to humans and animals are contained and deactivated within the enclosure.

Abstract:
An obstruction detection apparatus is provided for use in closing a power driven vent, such as a window, that is located in an opening. When the vent includes a first closing edge that moves as the vent is closed and the opening includes a second closing edge that is contacted by the first closing edge when the vent is in a fully closed position, the apparatus includes a detector configured to detect an obstruction at points all along the second closing edge without requiring contact between the obstruction and the vent and to deliver a detection signal when an obstruction is detected. A controller is connected to the detector for receiving the detection signal and delivering a corresponding alarm signal.

Abstract:
A quantitative process for monitoring female fertility cycle wherein the process involves directing a laser beam, preferably generated by a diode laser, onto an area of a slide containing an air-dried sample of a female body fluid. The diffraction pattern resulting from the sample is detected by a two-dimensional photo diode array and analyzed by a microprocessor. If a ferning pattern exists, such pattern will generate a characteristic structure in the diffraction pattern which is then detected by the photo diode array. If no ferning occurs, the corresponding diffraction pattern will be structureless. The microprocessor is programmed with an algorithm to produce a quantitative index of ferning indicating quantitatively the ferning level. Preferably, a plurality of spots on the sample are measured to determine the ferning level at each spot, and the microprocessor then makes a final determination as to final ferning level on the basis of the test results of all of the spots. This significantly increases the reliability of the final test result, since a defect at one test spot or anomaly of one test result will not be fatal to the final result.
