Abstract:

A novel concentrator system is described, which increases the efficiency of collecting sunlight energy and concentrates it on a target. This method uses an array of small movable reflective or refractive concentrator components that can move via a feedback mechanism which tracks the sun and concentrates the suns energy on to a second array of energy converting elements. In order to improve the effective collected energy, the array of concentrator elements is placed on a moving or tiltable flat slab (or dish, substrate, plane, plate, holder, tablet, or similar flat or non-flat surface) that tracks the sun. An alternative method uses an array of target elements or linear elements and a second array of concentrator elements in harmony such that and suns energy is efficiently redistributed by the reflective/reactive array on to the energy converting array as the sun's position in the sky (elevation and azimuth) changes. The elements of the reflective/refractive array are tilted by novel actuation mechanisms describe herein.

Abstract:

This application describes a revolutionary device to help prevent the development of pressure ulcers. The device works by using a small number of sensors in the wheelchair or bed to determine and track the projection of the patient's center of gravity (COP) onto the plane of the chair or bed. The sensor data are processed by various algorithms which determine when the danger of pressure ulcer development arises and alerts an attendant to reposition the patient. The repositioning is likewise monitored, and if it is inadequate, a higher-level alarm is issued. This device also maintains a history of patient position and movement, which is potentially useful for diagnostic purposes, such as tracking the degree of improvement resulting from a course of treatment or therapy. The archival record can also provide verification of proper care in the event of lawsuits or insurance claims. Operation of the device is non-intrusive and does not disturb either the patient or the caregiver unless repositioning of the patient is needed. The invention is based on simple, fundamental principles of physics and engineering. It is implemented with a few force sensors, microprocessors, and wireless networking technology—all of which are readily available. The unique attributes of this apparatus are: Real time performance coupled with maintenance of an archival history. Inexpensive hardware platform. Fully self-contained apparatus. Flexible algorithms for processing the sensor data and tracking motion trajectories in a quantitative manner. The hardware portion of the apparatus may adapted to be placed in the wheelchair or bed under the normal cushions, for mobility-impair patients, or it may be used as a force platform, much like a bathroom scale, for standing stability monitoring or gait training. It transmits the instantaneous COP position information over a wired or wireless network to a processing and monitoring station. It does not employ any external components such as video cameras, local GPS transmitters, etc. Aside from a tool for prevention of pressure in mobility-impaired patients, various embodiments of this system has applications in physical and occupational therapy, gait training, mental training (biofeedback), sports and athletic training, (e.g., golf swing training, baseball batting practice), gymnastics, yoga, dance/ballet, sports paraphernalia design, and a host of other areas, etc.

Abstract:

A macro electrically active mask includes two conductive layers separated by at least one filtering and insulating layer. The conductive layers are connected to each other by a power source. The power source includes an oscillator and a high voltage transformer. The power source generates a periodic voltage with a fundamental frequency and multiple harmonic frequencies. The power source is connected between the two conductive layers and the periodic voltage generates a periodic electric field between the two conductive layers. The fundamental frequency, the duty cycle, and the amplitude of the periodic voltage are configured to inactivate the microorganism that pass through the electric field.

Abstract:

A mask with at least one filtering layer that includes a fabric made of non-conductive polymer fibers embedded with nanoparticles of two different metals is provided. The population density of the nanoparticles of the two metals on the surface of non-conductive polymer fibers is configured such that the adjacent nanoparticles of the two metals have an average distance of two micrometers or less. The two different metals are selected such that the electric field intensity generated between the nanoparticles of the two different metal through the aerosol particle inactivates the microorganisms that may be inside the aerosol particle. When an aerosol particle comes into contact with the nanoparticles of the two metals, the aerosol acts as an electrolyte between the two metal types and a potential difference and an electric field is generated, through the aerosol particle, between the nanoparticles of the two metals.

Abstract:

A belt apparatus is configured to support the trousers worn by a person and to include a number of airbags that are deployable in a falling event to protect the person from bone breakages. The belt apparatus includes a flexible belt element and a fastener that appear and function in much the same way as an ordinary apparel trouser belt, i.e., fitting through belt loops in trousers and being fastenable to itself to support the pair of trousers at the waist of the person. Despite the ordinary appearance of the belt apparatus, it includes airbags internal thereto whose expansion is controlled by a control apparatus. Responsive to a falling event in a particular direction with respect to the person, the control apparatus triggers the rapid expansion of an airbag that is situated on the belt element in the particular direction with respect to the person and takes other actions.
