Abstract:
A process is provided for continuously controlling the hydrocarbon heat content and flow rate of a partial oxidation unit feed-gas stream under conditions where the composition and hence the hydrocarbon heat content of the feed-gas stream is subject to variation. The hydrocarbon heat content of the incoming gases is continuously measured and compared against a design hydrocarbon heat content. An evaluating means calculates whether a moderator is required to decrease the hydrocarbon heat content to the design hydrocarbon heat content or a supplemental high hydrocarbon heat content gas is required to increase the hydrocarbon heat content to the design hydrocarbon heat content. The process utilizes recycle synthesis gas as a moderator. Once the determination is made, the process automatically adjusts flow rates of the recycle synthesis gas stream, the supplemental high hydrocarbon heat content gas stream and the incoming feed-gas stream to provide a partial oxidation unit feed-gas stream with a constant optimum hydrocarbon heat content and flow rate.
Gasification Process Combined With Steam Methane Reforming To Produce Syngas Suitable For Methanol Production
An improved method for the production of stoichiometric ratioed syngas comprises partially oxidizing a gaseous feedstock containing substantial amounts of methane in a gasifier to produce a hot synthesis gas stream that is passed in indirect heat exchange through a steam reforming catalytic reactor. A portion of the steam reforming reaction products are mixed with the cooled gasifier synthesis gas stream exiting the steam reforming catalytic reactor to form a combined synthesis gas stream, called a "stoichiometric ratioed synthesis gas. " The stoichiometric ratioed synthesis gas stream can then be passed into a methanol synthesis unit at substantially the specifications for optimal methanol production with little or no external compression. In a second embodiment the gasifier unit is arranged and operated in parallel with a primary steam reformer unit. The respective synthesis gas streams exiting each unit are combined to form a combined synthesis gas stream that undergoes oxidation in a secondary catalytic reformer unit to form a stoichiometric ratioed synthesis gas that requires minimal external compression before being converted to methanol.

Abstract:
Filter for treating a gas such as the exhaust gas stream from a diesel engine, which exhaust gas often conveys carbon particles into the atmosphere. The treating filter comprises a casing holding a plurality of serially arranged filter beds. The latter are comprised of monolith ceramic discs, and are maintained in spaced apart relationship by spacer rings to define a turbulation chamber between adjacent beds. Said beds are provided with an oxidation catalyst to promote incineration of the retained particles. The beds further serve to reinforce and support a non-rigid filtering media contained within the respective chambers.

Abstract:
Low pour, low sulfur fuel oils are prepared by thermally cracking a high sulfur, high pour point atmospheric residuum and blending the product with a high wax, low sulfur, high pour point atmospheric residuum. The pour point may be lowered further by the addition of a pour point depressant.

Abstract:
A process is herein disclosed for decreasing olefin and diolefin unsaturation of pyrolysis naphtha (dripolene) without concomitant production of gum, heavy polymers, and/or coke; which process comprises treating pyrolysis naphtha with water at a temperature in the range of 500. degree. -700. degree. F at an elevated pressure in the range of 700-4000 psig for a residence time of from about 12 minutes to about 10 hours under conditions such that a portion of the treating water remains in the liquid phase. Treated naphtha product from said treating step, substantially reduced in olefinic and diolefinic unsaturation and essentially free of gum, heavy polymers and coke, may be hydrotreated with molecular hydrogen in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst for further reduction of olefinic and diolefinic unsaturation and removal of sulfur compounds.

Abstract:
A process for increasing the octane number of a paraffinic gasoline blending component comprises a reforming operation in which the component is contacted with hydrogen in the presence of a novel catalyst prepared by depositing a noble metal on silica gel and then dispersing said silica gel in an alumina gel matrix.
