Abstract:
N-formyl-L-aspartic anhydride is prepared using a minimum excess of formic acid. Acetic anhydride and a C. sub. 3 -C. sub. 6 secondary alcohol are added to the reaction mixture to consume excess formic acid. The reaction is suitable for further reactions without modification.

Abstract:
The present invention is an improved process for the synthesis of asparagine, a non-essential amino acid useful in food and medical applications. The process utilizes mineral acid to make an intermediate beta-methyl aspartate from a reaction mixture of aspartic acid and methanol. The intermediate product is then amminated in situ and asparagine collected with no need for an isolation step of the intermediates.

Abstract:
Methods for preparing (S)-N-tert-butyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-3-isoquinoline-carboxamide ("tic-c"), and converting tic-c to (S)-decahydroisoquinoline-3-carboxylic acid t-butylamide ("tic-d") are disclosed. The initial step in the formation of tic-c involves the phosgenation of a substituted tetrahydroisoquinoline to form an N-carboxy anhydride. Tic-d is used as an intermediate in the synthesis of known compounds having pharmaceutical activity.
Four square tooling plates each have an outer surface on which a plurality of workpieces are attached. The inner face of each tooling plate is precisely attached to a respective vertical surface of a rectangular block by means of a dowel extending into geometrically centered holes in the vertical face of the block and the tooling plate. Precise rotational alignment of the tooling plate with the block is achieved by a peg extending from the vertical face of the block into a timing hole in the tooling plate spaced from the center hole thereof. The block, with workpiece-loaded tooling plates thereon, is lowered onto a rotary table so that a geometric axis of the block is perfectly aligned with the rotational axis of the rotary table. Rotational alignment of the block with the rotary table is achieved by mating of keys extending from the bottom of a base plate of the block into keyways in the surface of the rotary table. A numerically controlled machining device automatically machines each workpiece on the first tooling plate, causes rotation of the rotary table by 90 degrees, machines the workpieces on the second tooling plate, again indexes the rotary table 90 degrees, etc.

Abstract:
A tabular variety of acicular gypsum crystal filler is prepared by hydrating calcium sulfate dihydrate particles in a seeded continuously stirred reactor at a low level of super-saturation to obtain crystals having an aspect ratio of about 100:10:1 and average length in the longest dimension of about 100-450 micrometers. For the manufacture of paper, the obtained tabular crystal slurry may be directly added to the paper pulp before web formation to obtain a filled paper having high filler retention.

Abstract:
A process for economically producing tabular acicular gypsum crystals in a continuously stirred reactor is disclosed. The process involves establishing a steady state atmospheric pressure reaction zone of about 20% to about 25% by weight solids of gypsum crystals in water at a temperature of about 50. degree. C. to about 60. degree. C. with continuous mild agitation. Calcium sulfate hemihydrate is fed to the reaction zone at a rate to maintain a low level of supersaturation, and a suspension of gypsum crystals in water containing crystals of a mean particle length at least greater than 45 microns is withdrawn.
