Abstract:

A spinneret steam blanketing system for blanketing the face of a spinneret with gas. The system includes a steam distribution ring surrounding a filament array, where the steam distribution ring abuts the spin head and is removably mounted to said spin head. The steam distribution ring is removed and the face of the spinneret may be wiped clean, without the need for removing and replacing the spin pack.

Abstract:

A melt extrusion spinneret plate has at least one non-circular capillary orifice for producing at least a single filament of circular cross-sectional shape. This non-circular cross-sectional shape of the extrusion capillary, when used to extrude filaments of circular cross-sectional shape, extends the spinneret wipe life by lessening the amount of thermal deposits, which extends the time between wipe cycles. As a result of increased wipe life, the productivity of the process is increased.

Abstract:

A process for making a synthetic melt spun polyamide filament in a solid phase polycondensation apparatus is disclosed. The flow rate of the purge (make-up) gas to the apparatus is increased, and the overall pressure in the apparatus is decreased, as compared to solid phase polycondensation apparatus of the prior art. As a result, the removal of the thermal degradation impurity from the polymer flake contributes to improving the yarn quality and at the same time, extends the spinneret wipe life.

The present invention is directed to a multi-filament yarn formed at least in part from filaments having cross-sectional zigzag shape with a 180 degree axis of symmetry. The filaments have a denier per filament generally in the range of about 0.1 to about 4.0. Abstract:

Provided by this invention is a modified synthetic polyamide polymer yarn produced by an improved melt extrusion process. Yarn of this invention are either partially oriented yarns (POY) or drawn oriented yarns. The improved process provides for modification of a polymer in a melt extruder.
