Abstract:

A disposable bioreactor for perfusion cell culture. Cells are grown in a plastic bag that is rocked and aerated on a mechanical platform. The bioreactor bag contains a filter that allows liquid to be removed from the bioreactor-without losing cells. Nutrients may be added through another port. The perfusion filter is constructed such that it can move freely on the liquid surface. The filter is flicked rapidly across the surface as a result of the rocking motion of the bioreactor and this tangential motion of the filter keeps it from clogging. A weight-based control system regulates feed and harvest rates and allows weeks of continuous operation. This invention has numerous applications in biotechnology and medicine.

Abstract:

A method and apparatus is provided for non-invasively mixing ingredients in closed containers. Mixing is performed by inducing waves in the liquid to be mixed. This is achieved by rocking the container in precise phase so as to produce resonance. With the waves moving back and forth in resonance, it is possible to mix with very low energy requirements compared to prior art. Mixing ingredients with resonant waves in a closed container eliminates the need for an invasive mixer and has obvious advantages in minimizing contamination. This makes the device ideal for biological processing that typically require sterile operation.

Abstract:

A method of forming plastic containers is disclosed. The method includes: providing a support platen having a cut outline and a groove outline in the top surface of the support platen and a plurality of exhaust ports in the bottom of the groove, where a plurality of spaced perforations are in the top surface of the support platen, where the groove is configured to define a cut outline; positioning a first film on the top surface of the support platen; providing a laser to cut the first film along the cut outline of the top surface of the support platen; providing a second film on top of the first film; connecting the plurality of exhaust ports and the plurality of space perforations to a vacuum source to secure the first film to the support platen; directing a jet of gas onto the second film at the to maintain the second sheet in contact with the first sheet at a seam during welding concentric with a beam from the laser to weld the first film and the second film; moving the laser and the support platen relative to each other to weld the first film and the second film along a seam outline; and providing the laser to cut the first film and the second film along the cut outline to provide a trimmed bag.

Abstract:

A low cost valve and system for automated ebb and flow irrigation utilizes a collapsible sleeve to control fluid flow direction. No external power, moving parts, or floats are needed to operate the valve, resulting in improved reliability, low operating cost, and minimal need for maintenance. The valve operates using feed pressure to close the drain when hydroponic nutrient solution is pumped into the cultivation chamber. The valve drains automatically once the pump is stopped, usually by means of a timer, and the spent hydroponic solution is recovered. The fill/drain cycle is repeated as needed to keep the plants moist, yet not waterlogged.

This invention is a mixing container apparatus with internal circulation that allows a user to efficiently mix soluble powders or highly viscous liquids in mixing containers.
