Abstract:

An exhaust stream buffering system is described to temper a temperature profile and reduce a particulate load to permit heat recovery and cleaning. The buffering system may reduce the volatile temperature profile to even the temperature spikes, and produce a more even cyclical temperature profile. When used in steel making facilities, the buffered stream may also be augmented by blast furnace gases to provide additional energy for a heat recovery system.

A system and method to permit fluidized combustion without requiring a separate fluidizing medium, such as sand. The system may include a combustion chamber, a fuel feed system coupled to the combustion chamber, an ignition system coupled to the combustion chamber, a fluidizing system coupled to the combustion chamber, where the fluidizing system includes a fuel and fluidizing medium formed from the same material, and a heat recovery system. The method may include delivering a pelletized fuel into a combustion chamber by a fuel feed system and onto a fluidizing plate, igniting the pelletized fuel with an igniter system coupled to the fluidizing plate, fluidizing the pelletized fuel after combustion is started in the absence of a fluidizing medium beyond the pelletized fuel, and heating a medium in a heat exchanger with combustion gases.

Abstract:

Storing settings related to an application in a settings file for transport to a second computer. A software module reads an initialization file identifying the possible settings related to the application, and identifying the locations of those settings. The software module reads the settings from those locations, including a system registry as well as individual files associated with the application. The software module stores the settings in a settings file. The settings file is transported to the second computer, or the second computer reads the settings file over a network. The software module may execute at the second computer and write the settings from the settings file to the appropriate locations on the second computer.

Abstract:

Determining, prior to operation of an application program module, that a foreign file format is fully convertible to a native file format. Full conversion of the foreign file format means that a significant majority of the style and presentation of the content of the foreign file are preserved after conversion to the native file format. Prior to an attempted file conversion by the application program module, the filename extension of the foreign file is examined. If the filename extension is recognized as indicating that the foreign file is fully convertible, the application program module is commanded to access and convert the foreign file to the native file format. If the filename extension does not indicate that the foreign file is fully convertible, a determination is made as to whether the filename extension is registered in an operating system registry. If the filename extension is registered, it is considered not to a WordPerfect file and is ignored. If no determination can be made from the filename extension as to whether the foreign file is fully convertible and the filename extension is not registered, the internal structure of the foreign file is examined.

A photon detector includes a sensor array of optical sensors disposed in a plane and four substantially identical scintillation crystal bars. Each optical sensor is configured to sense luminescence. Each of the four scintillator crystal bars being a rectangular prism with four side surfaces and first and second end surfaces, each scintillation bar has two side surfaces which each face a side surface of another scintillation bar, and each scintillation crystal bar generating a light scintillation in response to interacting with a received gamma photon. A first layer () is disposed in a first plane disposed between and adjacent facing side surfaces of the four substantially identical scintillation crystal bars with a light sharing portion () adjacent the first end surface and a reflective portion () adjacent the second end surface. Abstract:

A radiation detector is disclosed that includes a scintillation crystal and a plurality of photodetectors positioned to detect low-energy scintillation photons generated within the scintillation crystal. The scintillation crystals are processed using subsurface laser engraving to generate point-like defects within the crystal to alter the path of the scintillation photons. In one embodiment, the defects define a plurality of boundaries within a monolithic crystal to delineate individual detector elements. In another embodiment, the defects define a depth-of-interaction boundary that varies longitudinally to vary the amount of light shared by neighboring portions of the crystal. In another embodiment the defects are evenly distributed to reduce the lateral spread of light from a scintillation event. Two or more of these different aspects may be combined in a single scintillation crystal. Additionally, or alternatively, similar SSLE defects may be produced in other light-guiding elements of the radiation detector.
