Abstract:

The throat configuration of a converging-diverging nozzle (16) is varied by defining a throat area (18) of the nozzle by a plurality of impinging ion beams arranged symmetrically around the throat area of the nozzle and directed toward a central point (34) within the aforementioned throat area. Each of the ion streams is independently controlled so as to permit variation in the symmetry of the throat area as well as the size thereof, and permit deflections of the fluid flow paths as well as changes in, for example, a thrust generated by a fluid stream passing through the nozzle.

Abstract:

A solar energy system is disclosed in which the solar energy is converted to electrical energy for immediate use or the energy may be stored for use at a later date. The solar energy is converted to electrical energy by a large photo-voltaic array and the output of the photo-voltaic array is fed through an inverter and other control circuitry to produce an a. c. electrical output of a predetermined magnitude. The a. c. electrical output may be used directly or the electrical energy may be fed to a storage system for later use. In one embodiment the a. c. electrical energy is employed to drive a pneumatic pump or air compressor for storing the energy in the form of a compressed gas, either in a rigid tank or in a resiliently expandable tank. The compressed air from the tank is released through a control valve and is fed through a pneumatic motor. The pneumatic motor drives an electric generator for producing an a. c.

Abstract:

Apparatus (10, 110) for smoothing energy received from an intermittent source (12, 112), such as a solar energy collector, employs an enclosure (14, 114) functioning as a smoothing and storing capacitor. An energy cell (20, 120) is provided for feeding electrical energy to the enclosure when the source of intermittent energy is unable to do so, with the energy cell being charged by the intermittent source when energy from the latter accedes a predetermined value by use of an appropriate regulator (32, 132).
