Wholly Aromatic Polyester Capable Of Forming An Anisotropic Melt Phase Consisting Essentially Of Para-Oxybenzoyl Moiety, Bromo-Substituted-Para-Oxybenzoyl Moiety, And Meta-Oxybenzoyl Moiety
A novel wholly aromatic polyester is provided which exhibits an anisotropic melt phase and which is capable of readily undergoing melt processing. The polyester of the present invention consists essentially of the recurring units (a) paraoxybenzoyl moiety, (b) bromo-substituted-para-oxybenzoyl moiety, and (c) meta-oxybenzoyl moiety. The resulting polymer may be economically produced. Additionally, it may be melt processed at an advantageous temperature which makes possible the utilization of standard equipment such as that heretofore utilized for the melt processing of polyethylene terephthalate.

Abstract:
Polymers that have limiting viscosities, measured in tetrahydrofuran at 20. degree. C. , of at least about 200 mL/g and that can be made by addition polymerization of a mixture of monomers containing: A. from 100--about 30 wt % of esters of acrylic acid and methacrylic acid with monohydric saturated aliphatic alcohols which contain from 1-22 C atoms; and B. up to about 70 wt % of monomers selected from the group consisting of: (1) unsaturated aliphatic carboxylic acids with 3-5 C atoms and their amides, (2) styrene and alkylstyrenes with 1-4 C atoms in their alkyl residues, (3) acrylonitrile, (4) vinyl esters of aliphatic C. sub. 1-18 carboxylic acids, and (5) amino substituted esters of acrylic acid and methacrylic acid with monohydric alcohols having from 2-6 carbon atoms are highly effective anti-sling additives for textile lubricants.

Abstract:
A novel polyester is provided which has been found to exhibit an anisotropic melt phase at a temperature which enables it readily to undergo melt processing to form quality fibers, molded articles, etc. The polyester of the present invention is different in character than polyesters of the prior art and includes as essential ingredients moieties derived from para-hydroxy benzoic acid, 1,2-bis(para-carboxy phenoxy)ethane, terephthalic acid, and substituted hydroquinone in the proportions indicated. The polyester of the present invention generally can be more economically produced than polyesters of the latter three moieties (two of which are relatively expensive) while surprisingly yielding an anisotropic melt of relatively low viscosity at a desirable temperature for melt processing in spite of the substantial concentration of relatively stiff para-oxybenzoyl moieties which contribute to the overall nature of the resulting polyester. In a preferred embodiment the polyester is capable of undergoing melt processing at a temperature below approximately 300. degree. C. , and in a particularly preferred embodiment at a temperature below approximately 290. degree. C. (e. g.
