Start with one clue and a bounded question.

A research guide, not a consumer report. Verify important findings at the source.

Preserve the clue

Copy the name, address, number, email, date, or record type exactly as you received it. Note the source and context.

Add place and time

Choose one likely jurisdiction and date window. Avoid silently joining present-day and historical details.

Choose the closest source

Find the office, archive, library, court, publication, or collection most likely to have created or preserved the record.

Cross-check before concluding

Require another identifier or independent record, and keep conflicts visible.
